LO waking up hysterical?

Well, we just moved and DS is sick so it could be from either of those things, but yesterday DS woke up from his nap crying.  When I went in there to get him he didn't calm down.  He kept leaning his neck and head back like he does in tantrum.  He cried for probably 15 minutes, like hysterically.  Meanwhile we tried different things to calm him:  putting him back in the sleepsack and in the crib, putting him down in bed without sleepsack, letting him lay down with me in the bed, putting on a Baby Einstein show, offering a drink, etc.  The only thing that worked was walking outside.  What do you think that was?  Has anyone else experienced it?

  • Ds has done this on occasion. The only thing I can think of is that he had a really bad dream. Walking outside might have distracted your DS enough to forget about it.

  • Lily's done that when she's waking from a nap a few times.  It's pretty rare, and MIL and I both felt like she wanted to keep sleeping but had woken up too fully.  Often she'll half-wake and then drop back off, but every now and then she can't drop back to sleep and she cries for about 15 minutes or so and nothing makes it better except giving her time.  She did it yesterday.

I don't think it's nightmares or anything, because when she seems to have nightmares she'll cling to me and not want to be put down.  But when this happens, she doesn't want me to pick her up and will slap my hands away.

  • Sometimes C does this around 4am.  He completely looses it if I go in there to soothe him, but if DH goes in there, he lays right down and falls right back to sleep.  I have no idea why.

  • Thanks everybody!  Glad to know I'm not alone!  Yeah, he is getting over an ear infection and pneumonia.  I also thought his nap was too short and he wasn't ready to get up yet.  Could be a little of everything I guess!
