Babies: 6 - 9 Months

DD is 8.5 months and wants food all the time

I can't get her to drink a full bottle anymore! I tried putting the bottle first because I know she needs the formula (done BF as of Jan 1). It isn't an issue with the bottle, she'd just rather have food. So, I cut down on the food, and she still doesnt want the bottle, she wants food...and water in her sippy cup. So, I tried the formula in a sippy cup, and that didn't work. I don't think it is the BM to Formula transition, she always had 1 bottle of formula per day and would always drink that, so she isn't just being fussy. How terrible is it if she only gets 20 oz per day of formula? I am worried about brain development, etc. She goes to the pedi on Feb. 18.

  • You can't force her to drink, so I would try not to worry about it. Also, my pedi said to give my son as much solid food as he wants at this point. He still nurses and drinks about 9 oz. of formula a day, but he eats a ton of regular food. It's actually kind of shocking since he's a lightweight.

  • My DD is the same age and is the same way....She LOVES food. I am still BF and pumping but she has cut down to 3 nursing sessions on a weekday and takes 9oz. while I am at work...down from a high of 14.

Basically, she insists on eating whenever anyone around her is eating and often when we are done, or her food is gone she is not very happy about it, but definitely not still hungry.  We haven't officially added a third meal, but at this point she gets two good sized meals plus a couple small snacks a day.

I am not too worried about her BM intake, babies are pretty good at getting what they need.. She is a tiny little thing at about 14lbs., but she is meeting her milestones and is growing, albeit slowly. That hasn't changed since we added real food to her diet. I do make a concerted effort to feed her healthy food. I try to make sure she gets a balanced diet with good sources of protein and fats, not just all carbs/grains and sugary fruit.
