My LO is 10 months and is learning to eat with his fingers. What are some good nutritious fingers foods to encourage this? I don't want him eating puffs all the time since there is hardly any nutrition in them. Btw he has 4 teeth.
Roasted veggies (squash, potato, sweet potato, zucchini, carrots, parsnips, etc). Steamed veggies (broccoli and cauliflower florets, zucchini). Banana, avocado, peaches (very ripe). Stewed meat (chicken, beef, etc). I find that cutting things into sticks the size of steak fries works really well. My LO was able to process all of these w/o any teeth.
Our daughter has two bottom teeth but doesnt use them to chew lol.
She eats puffs, Gerber Pickups, Cheerios, peeled grapes (cutup), steamed carrots, green peas (she loves the can ones no salt added), wheat toast with cheese whiz cut into small pieces, Gerber yogurt melts and Banana cut into small pieces.
My daughter has two bottom teeth. For finger foods we have tried: Cut up grapes (quartered or sixthed), blueberries cut in half, cut up kiwi, peas, steamed carrots, roasted veggies (sweet potato, potato, parsnip, turnip, carrots), canned mandarin oranges cut up, canned peaches cut up, cut up pasta with butter or a little sauce, cut up toast or waffles with a little butter, and beans (black & white). Her favorites are definetly the blueberries!
DS has been on finger foods since about 6 1/2 months. Teeth are completely unnecessary. At this point I dice everything since the pincer grasp is well developed. He eats everything we do except for things like soup which I strain and he eats the goodies.
We did BLW, so LO has been eating finger foods since 6 months. Basically, what PP have said. Anything that can be cut up into small pieces and is not super hard. LO chowed down on fried catfish and jalapeo hush puppies over the weekend. Basically, she eats what we eat.
A great recommendation I got from here for snacks were the little fruit cups, with no sugar added. The mandarin oranges are our favorite. The peaches and pears are also big hits.
Steamed sweet potatoes, peas, any steamed veggie pretty much, cut up raviolis, cut up pierogies, cut up fruit, cheese, hummus on crackers or mum-mums, cheerios, grilled cheese, quesadillas... She pretty much will eat anything I give her. Last night she had beans and rice. She also eats lasagna, noodles, toast, bagels, graham crackers. She will eat what we eat. I haven't given her a lot of meat but she has had turkey and chicken. Just cut things up into little pieces. I have to give her only a few things at a time or else she tries to get all of them in her mouth then loses most of it by dropping. Peas are still kind of hard for her to pick up.
How old is your LO? My sweet almost 8 month old is still just BF. She wouldn't let us feed her purees and doesn't really get excited by finger foods. She is the opposite of my 2 year old who was regularly on solids by 6 months. She has only showed interest in bacon! Which I'm not about to let her eat. She has tried banana and doesn't like it. I'm sort of at a loss.
