Serious question...

I may sound slightly crazy but thought I might ask. Have you or anyone you know developed an allergy or sensitivity during pregnancy and then the child was allergic or sensitive to it?

I ask because I have developed a latex sensitivity since becoming pregnant. I blister when I try to use normal bandaids. Fruits and vegetables with high levels natural latex give me terrible gas and cramping. I've cut those things out. I now use latex free products and stay away from trigger foods. I have informed my OB. It's in my chart.

Re: Serious question...

  • My sister was like that when she was pregnant but my niece had never had a problem with latex.

  • I know your skin and body are just more sensitive in general during pregnancy so I don't think it's linked. I could be wrong. I have no experience. I just know that when I wax a pregnant client, their skin is more sensitive.

This makes me feel better. MIL has a latex allegry and this sensitivity is driving me nuts. I'm just worried about LO having it. It's one of those things that is hard to avoid.

I totally understand how you feel. Both of my boys had/have a milk and soy allergy, it sucks because almost everything has soy in it. If I want to breastfeed this LO I'll probably have to go on an allergy free diet too, I will not be surprised if this LO has the allergy.

  • A girl I work with developed a lot of allergies when she was pregnant and unfortunately, they've stuck around...particularly eggs and gluten...it's absolutely possible.  Her son has the same allergies that she developed and then some.
  • Not actually an allergy, but I developed an aversion to meat - like, chicken made me gag. It never went away, and DS doesn't really like to eat meat.

    I think it's coincidence, though.

Fingers crossed that yours will go away and won't get passed on to LO!

  • Latex allergies are typically developed from overexposure. Your LO should be fine but if you are concerned, you may want to steer clear of teething toys like Sophie the Giraffe, etc. with your LO.

  • My friend's mom developed a milk allergy while pregnant with her first. Both her children are allergic to mill, although one has grown out of it recently.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I was allergic to my dog during my last pregnancy and would get horrible hives if I touched him. I didn't have any reaction to my other dog though. B isn't allergic to dogs as far as we know.
