Babies: 6 - 9 Months

standing up in crib! HELP!

DS is almost 7 months and has been a great sleeper, usually for naps and bedtime will put down in crib awake and be asleep within 5 - 10 minutes.  In the last week, he has discovered to stand up in crib.  He was just standing up after his naps, but in the past few days he is trying to stand up before his naps.  The past two days, nap has been an hour + process, then he is over tired.  I am afraid he is going to hurt himself by falling down in crib and hitting his head. I have tried to go in and lay him back down with a toy to play with, letting him go for awhile, waiting until he was drowsy. After an hour, he is way overtired and then nearly impossible to get to sleep. He will just scream while he is standing up. Any suggestions would be so helpful!! TIA!

Re: standing up in crib! HELP!

  • My only suggestion is that you might try putting padded teething rails around the top edge of the crib. If he falls, it might help cushion the sharp edges.

this is what we did. You can find instructions online on how to make them. I used a thick felt so I did not have to sew anything. My lo still pulls to a stand the second I out her in the crib but she has figured out how to sit back down now. She plays for a while and then goes to sleep.

  • Our son does this too.  We lowered his crib his crib which deterred him for awhile like a week.  Has he learned how to sit/get back down once he stands up?  When he does that'll help with your fear of him hitting his head.  Our sons tries to fall to the slide but there was once he fell back and hit his head (that I know of).  I was watching on the monitor and was about to go lay him back down and he fell back. He didn't even cry.  It sounds like you've done everything so you can add padding if you aren't fearful of it but I don't think you're suppose because they can use it to step on (I could be wrong about that part).  Just watch him and eventually he'll get over the fun of it.

  • Thanks for suggestions! I am going to buy some padding for the top of the crib.  We lowered the crib this afternoon and I removed his breathable bumpers to avoid a "stepping stone." He hasn't taught himself to sit back down, but I guess after a few bumps to his head he will learn! Thanks for the help!

You'll have to teach him how to sit back down during the day. He'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. We were in the same boat earlier in the week. DS takes longer to fall asleep now because he'd rather stand around than sleep. But at least he doesn't fall back and hit his head anymore. He never hit it that hard, thankfully.

  • I'm glad you posted this because we're going through this as well with the oldest (by 2 minutes).  We lowered the crib, which helped somewhat.  He still stands, but at least he's not towering over the top rail.  But I'm in nap hell.  In the past week, he's mastered sitting, crawling, and is now pulling himself up.  Naps are only possible by letting him sleep on me.
