Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Consuming enough milk

Hey ladies,

My LO eats oatmeal with fruit in the morning, then a bottle mid-morning, a bottle in the afternoon, veggies for dinner, and a bottle before bed. I know the recommended milk intake is 24-32 oz and although that's for formula I am exclusively pumping so I'm going by that guide. Well the past few days he's been wanting to eat lunch and not a bottle as he watches the little girl I watch eat lunch. I gave him a serving a fruit and then he wont drink a bottle. Anyways for the past two days he's only consumed about 16 oz. should I be concerned or is this common. He will be 7 months this coming week. Thank you!

Re: Consuming enough milk

  • Bottles are most important at this point. I live by "food before 1 is just for fun" motto. My LO is BF, he nurses every 3 hours or so, sometimes every 2. I feed him solids after he nurses.

Hop on over to the BF board, there is good info there. Since your pumping BM, you LO shoudnt be following a formula guide. My LO nurses at least 5-6 times a day. Good Luck to you! :)

  • Our pedi said told us by 6mo that she shouldn't be drinking more than 18-24oz and that her primary nutrition should be coming from food, and that she should be eating 3 meals a day with bottles in between. That is formula though, not bm.

  • my peidatrican also told me between 20-24oz of formula since miss ava decided to start eating the 3 meals a day. I would just check with your pediatrician
  • Now that LO is eating solids 3xs a day she has no interest in a bottle during this feeding, so I have been switching to smaller bottles in between feedings, it seems to be working better for her. She also seems much more interested in eating with us then her bottle.
  • Our pedi stands by the idea that primary nutrition should be coming from either formula or BM for the first year, with a minimum of 25 or 26 oz each day (we are exclusively formula now).  Food is for fun, practice, developing their tastes, etc... When dd started showing less interest in her bottles, I pulled back from three solids "meals" a day to just two.  She is still getting to have all kinds of veggies, fruits, beans, cereal, etc... throughout the day and I know her iron and nutrients are comprehensively included in the bottles.
  • Thanks ladies! I'm wondering if maybe it was due to teething because today he seems to be wanting his bottle again. He usually takes in about 20-26oz a day between three 6oz bottles, 4oz bottles with his cereal in the morning, and a 4oz bottle after his dinner. After his breakfast  I've tried to give him his bottle and he has no interest and it doesn't matter how much he eats. I know everyone is going to have conflicting opinions and/or ideas of what LO's should be taking in at this point and he is mostly eating bottles besides breakfast and dinner which he does have formula mixed with his cereal in the morning and drinks a bottle after his veggies at dinner so I guess I will not worry too much. Thank you for all the responses though. It gives me a guideline of what others are doing with their LO's. The reason I ask here and not my pediatrician is because we are military and he HAS to be seen on post and there's not a relationship with the pediatrician. I'm not happy about bit but that's another post all in its self! Thank you again! Have a wonderful rest of your weekend.
