Baby Names

WWYD? And Suggestions, please!

Hey gals. We have a son and are expecting another boy very soon but we haven't decided on a name; not because we can't agree, but because we just can't find one that we love.

Our son, however, has clung to one of the names we had discussed and insists on calling the baby by that name no matter how hard we try to get him to call the baby another name.

The name he calls him is Jacob or "baby Jacob", which meets the criteria that no one on either side of our family has the name, but I was hoping to name the baby something that goes better with our son's name which is Braden....somewhere along the lines of Nolan, Ethan, Declan. Like I said, we can't get him to call the baby anything else though.

What would you do in this situation? Jacob is a fine name and a classic - I like it. I can actually see us with a Jacob, but it just doesn't seem to pair well with our older son's...or does it? Should we go with it?

If so, do you have any middle name suggestions? If not, any other first name suggestions?

Thanks

Re: WWYD? And Suggestions, please!

  • I think it sounds great with your son's name.
  • Anything you pick will automatically go with your son's name. Unless it's a completely off the wall choice, you don't need a sibset name. Jacob is a good name if you like it, if you don't, that's fine too.

  • Are you asking should you use the name Jacob based soley because your son calls the baby Jacob? I wouldn't because it's up to you and your husband. FWIW, my brother named me and I love my name.

I like Jacob and I think it goes fine with Braden. I also love Ethan.

  • Personally I think Jacob goes well with Braden. I don't know what to tell you regarding your DS though...except that it should come down to what you and your DH decide.

Is your son on the younger side? He may be clinging to Jacob because it is easier for him to say.

  • My son is almost 3, so yes he is young, but he can say every name we have discussed. He even pronounces Ethan correctly with the th. I'm thinking he may just like the way it sounds? But really, who knows what he is thinking? lol But because we do like it and can't decide on anything else, we feel that maybe we should go with it. We were always going to use Jacob as a middle name for this one, anyway.

Our son's full name is Braden Michael - do you ladies have any suggestions of a middle name for Jacob? Does something Irish like Jacob Declan or Jacob Liam sound best or does another classic name like Jacob Matthew or Jacob Thomas sound better?

  • Your DS1 will get over it eventually ... just go with what you like.

  • In regards to the DS part, mine is almost 5 and is insisting that the baby will be named Max if we have a boy and if it's a girl I get to pick.  We aren't going with Max so I've been trying to reinforce that it won't be happening but I don't think he gets it lol.

  • It sounds like you both like the name Jacob, so why not use it... it would be cute, too, to say that DS1 named his little brother. In my opinion, Jacob pairs well with Braden. And it sounds good with a lot of middle names... Jacob Declan is fine, Jacob Liam too.  Others: Jacob Daniel, Jacob Benjamin, Jacob Charles.

  • I'd go with Jacob. ;)

  • Well, it's cute that your 3 yo has an opinion, but that shouldn't dictate your name choice unless you want it to. My three yo would have chosen Sarah for our dd, I have no idea why. Yet as the patents, we vetoed it. You can do that, too, if you want! GL!

  • I love Jacob. Ethan is okay too. I don't like Declan or Nolan. So personally, I would stick with Jacob!

This. I think that all four names are good options. FWIW, my cousin called her babysister-to-be Bibi and after she was born she kept calling her by the name of a brand of baby cookies, my uncle and aunt decided against Bibi and thought the baby cookie thing was hilarious. After a while it just wore off and baby sister goes by her real name now. So no, you don't have to go with Jacob because your son names him that.
