Trouble TTC

Mixed feelings after meeting with my RE

My  husband and I went to our first RE appointment on Monday.  We both LOVED the doctor and felt very comfortable talking openly with her.  I told myself I wouldn't cry...but of course I did.  I have to go back on Monday for CD3 bw and then again later in the month for a feme vue test.

The RE  recommended we go straight to IVF.  This made me cry just a little too.  I just wish my body would cooperate already!  She feels like there is a blockage in my tubes that is preventing my eggs from getting into position.  She said IUI won't do any good if my eggs can't get to where they are supposed to be.  The dr also said that she wanted to look at the results from my bloodwork and the feme vue test to get a better idea of what is going on.   I hope that one of the tests shows something that can explain what is going on in my body!  Endometriosis just plain stinks!  Thanks for letting me vent :)

Re: Mixed feelings after meeting with my RE

  • How does she know that you have a blockage? Were you given an ultrasound at your appt that showed it?

If not, I would definitely side eye her. I would also request an HSG test that is done mainly to check for blockages.

I hope that you get answers soon!

She said it sounds like I have a blockage because we haven't gotten pregnant despite using clomid for 3 cycles and femera for 3 cycles and my lap procedure found a blocked tube and endo.  She is doing a sonohsg on CD 10 to check for a blockage.  I hope that this will give us more useful information!  I felt like it was so early to recommend IVF.  I told her my husband and really didn't want to jump straight to IVF.   I think February will be a great month for answers.

  • Technically you are not jumping straight to IVF if you have already done six treatment cycles (3 on clomid and 3 on femera as you mentioned) then you have tried other treatment first.

And if you had a LAP that showed endo and a blocked tube I'm sure the HSG will confirm the blocked tube (unless when they did the lap they cleaned them out for you) which means you need IVF and the 6 cycles you did were a complete waste.

I hope the month brings you answers as to what you need to do.  Good luck.

  • I have had an HSG, and an u/s and have been dx with both fallopian tubes blocked. I am having LAP surgery in 2 weeks to see if it can be repaired, if not we will most likely go straight to IVF. My RE said the chances of the tubes being unblocked, and staying that way are very rare, and that our best shot will be IVF. This, of course, is not what I WANT to do, but, we want a baby so bad, and if IVF is our only chance of me carrying a child, then we will do it!

  • I had a HSG in 2011 that showed everything was clear.  The femvue test I am having is a sono hsg.  This test will use saline and air bubbles and the dr will observe how it flows into my tubes which will let her know if there is a blockage.  She also gave me an antibiotic prescription to take beforehand. When I had the HSG, it was uncomfortable, so I am not looking forward to the sono hsg...but I am looking forward to the answers that it brings.  Thank you for the advice.

A saline sonogram won't diagnose a blockage, or so I'm told. You have to have a true HSG. Your post isn't entirely clear which one you mean, but be sure of which you're getting. One hurts much more, and you should be sure of a diagnosis before going through something like IVF!

  • You are completely right.  I didn't figure in my medicated cycles.  They also happened before my lap.  And they were a complete waste :(  During my lap, they cleaned out my endo and opened my blocked tube.  Your message was right on point...and I hate it for that!  IVF is just a little scary to me because I am not educated on it yet.  I know that I will educate myself if it is decided that it is the only way we will conceive.

  • I agree with you.  IVF is not what I want to do at all.  But, if it is the way we meet our child that it is exactly what we will do.

Katib's right.  I know IVF sounds so scary, but if you have tubal issues, it is your best shot.  If your RE recommends it, I'd take that seriously.  Good luck, and I sincerely hope that any follow up tests show that your tubes aren't an obstacle.
