Sciatica

Hello ladies, I am sure sciatic nerve problems are common, so how do you get relief? The pain kept me up for most of the night.

Re: Sciatica

  • Stretching... Hot baths... Massage if you can swing it. If money is an issue check with the place and see if they offer a 30 min massage and just have them work on your hip, quad, hamstring and lower back.

  • You can try Bowenwork some massage therapists do it or chiropractors also treat it. Id do that if you can.

I had two weeks of sciatic pain before I was able to get a Bowenwork treatment that before I was pregnant and the pain went from a 8 to a 2 with one treatment! Ill do it again when the sciatica starts back up.

Mine too, it's just too debilitating at this point.  5pm hits and I'm done moving.

  • I would definitely talk to your doctor or midwife. I just went in yesterday for a prenatal check up and told my midwife about my lower back and hip pain. She prescribed a chiropractor that's covered under my insurance and said that this is a pretty normal problem and the best way to manage it would be to go! Hope this helps and that you can gain relief.
  • Stretching. Only thing that ever helped me.

  • One great stretch that I do religiously is to sit on a chair with your feet on the ground. Put one ankle on top of the opposite knee. Lean forward. You should feel stretching on the thigh/butt area. Do that often! GL

  • The only thing that helped me was  wearing a maternity support belt, but I never tried a chiropractor. I've heard that a visit to one can do wonders too.

this stretch mentioned plus one other. Sit on bed or couch with one leg up (the one on the side with the pain) and other leg hang off. Flex toes up and with straight back lean forward as far as you can. Nod head up and own 10 times. Then keep head down and flex and straighten toes 10 times. Switch sides if needed or just repeaton one side.  You'll feel this stretching your hamstrings and italsostretches your sciatic nerve from butt to toes

i had herniated disc and sciatica in May and this stretch was amazing. My leg was numb down to my toes from the nerve and its amazing how I felt this stretch the entire length of the nerve.

     Good luck!

  • I was having the same issue until I started a prenatal pilates class. My whole body feels better, and I am sleeping SO much better! Be sure to inform the instructor that you are pregnant, and they will advise you of any moves you need to modify. Also, my mother in law gave me this great lotion from Bath and Body Works called "sleep". It uses lavender and vanilla aromatherapy...I rub on my hands and chest before bed, and it is very relaxing. Good luck!
