A few questions for my fellow tongue tie mommas

Did you get your LO's clipped?  If so, what was the deciding factor?

Did/is it affecting LO's eating?  Could it delay him saying mama, dada, baba??

I've been meaning to get a consultation from the ENT, but honestly I keep forgetting/putting it off.

Just curious what everyone else is doing or have already done.

TIA

We were having serious issues with breastfeeding DD, and I had made mention of the fact that she appeared to be tongue-tied at the hospital and to the pedi, but no one seemed to think it was an issue except DH and I.  We did have to stop breastfeeding due to this and other medical issues, but I took DD to an ENT at 3 months and he was surprised that no other medical professional seemed to think it was a concern for breastfeeding, let alone later in life it could cause speech impairment.  At that point we decided to have the procedure done, as DH had a speech impairment as a child (not due to a tongue-tie, but still....) and he did not want DD to have to go through what he did.

I will say that while the procedure is "easy" in that it really is just a quick clip I wish we had done it much sooner.  DD was so upset, cried hysterically and turned a shade of red I'd never seen before, I think it would have been "easier" when she was much younger.  In the end she was fine within 10 minutes afterwards and has been sticking her tongue out ever since! Smile

I've gotta stop putting this off, as I don't want it to be worse as he gets older!
You said she was fine within 10 minutes?  Did she seem to have any pain later in the day or at night?  Was it something you gave Tylenol for?  Sorry for all the questions!

our LO had her frenulum clipped at about 6 days old.  She lost 13 oz in the hospital and by the time we took her for her first checkup she has only gained 1oz.  Pedi noticed she was tounge tied right to the tip of her tongue.  We didn't even second guess the dr's recommendation.  He said LO's have no nerves in their frenulum and it would be painless. If we waited til she got older then she'd have to see a specialist and actually have a surgery to have it corrected.  He left the room, came back w/ the supplies, clipped the frenulum and there was 1 tiny drop of blood.  She cried for about 1 min and we went home and immediately breastfed.  She's been a little piglet ever since! :)

I wish our dr did it, it would be much easier and it would have been done by now but we have to go to an ent. Thankfully it doesn't affect his eating....but I do worry about speech issues later in life.
    Thanks for sharing your stories!

Don't be sorry about the questions!  Shortly after the procedure was over I  sat down and gave her a bottle, she had no problem with taking it.  I was concerned mainly because they did give her a small shot of Novocaine before clipping, but she was all good!  She was fine after that, we didn't need to give her any Tylenol as she never showed any signs of being in pain.

I will say that I went to the ENT appointment alone to have the procedure done because everyone said it would be so easy, but I would not suggest going alone, even if it's just for some moral support for you!

We got DS clipped at 13 weeks because it was causing issues with breastfeeding. Our LC diagnosed it, I'm a bit peeved that with all the other poking and prodding that happens in the early weeks that no one else caught it sooner.

Procedure was done by nurse midwife at my pedi's office. At that point since he was considered an older baby, they gave him a little bit of ibuprofen and also sent us away with a small syringe of ibuprofen for later. We noticed an immediate improvement with nursing.

We had the procedure done at 2 weeks old...he cried because they had to lay him on a table. The doctor clipped the frenulum and he stopped crying as soon as I picked him up. We just decided to do it before he was older and would need general anesthesia (they would have had another consult around age 2)...no feeding issues

ETA: not to imply that he would have definitely needed to be under general, but our ENT said if there is extra tissue or anything around it that would need to be removed later on then there was a chance

It really wasn't a bad procedure at all...he ate fine after the procedure, and wasn't cranky at all :)

DS is tongue tied, but it is not severe.  (In fact, DH is tongue tied too, never had it clipped, and his is worse than DS!  No speech/eating/etc. issues at all for him.)

We didn't get his clipped because he showed no issues eating, and the pediatrician told us that had it been HIS son, he wouldn't have had it clipped.  DS can still stick his tongue out and has already started babbling (and as I mentioned eats just fine...he was 20 pounds 9 ounces at his 6 month appt!) I think it really depends on the severity of the tie.

We had our daughter's clipped at 3 days old.  It made feeding so much easier and more comfortable for me.  It was a quick procedure, only took a few min.  The only reason she cried was because the nurse had to help hold her mouth open for the dr.   Her dr. assured us that there are no nerve endings there, so no worries.  After it was done, the dr. handed her back to me and she stopped crying right away.  I was scared before we had it done, but am so glad we did it!

Thank you so much, cole!! And thanks for answering my questions! I'm calling the ent on Monday to make a appointment! At least for a consultation and their opinion if ds should have it clipped!
    Thanks again!

Thanks! It's nice to hear from the other side too! Like i mentioned, it doesn't affect his eating either. I'm just gonna get the opinion from the ent and go from there!

My DD2 was born with a tongue tie. I didn't even know until her pedi pointed it out at her two month appointment. She has no problem breastfeeding and we were about to move again and my husband was deploying so we put it off. As she got older, it seemed to become more severe (when she stuck her tongue out, it looked like a heart). My husband also has slightly tongue-tied and if given the opportunity, would of had his clipped. With that and the risk of future speech problems we decided to clip her's  at 13 months. She was put under general anesthesia had it clipped by a surgeon. It was super easy and was over in 20 min and totally normal after. She's 2.5 and advanced in her speech.
