Random question

If your family lives out of town, do they call before they come visit you? My ILs currently live 7 hours away, so we always know when they're coming, but they're moving about 3 hours away in April. I have a feeling they will surprise us with weekend visits. I don't think it's out of line to ask DH to ask them to let us know in advance when they're coming, do you? He doesn't think it's a big deal for them to drop in, but I'd like to know so our guest room and bathroom would be ready for company.

Re: Random question

  • My ILs live 1 hour out of town at their cottage and come into the city regularly, but they would never just show up without calling first.  There is no way it's acceptable to show up at someone's house for a weekend visit without asking first.

  • My inlaws live about 5 miles away (10 minute drive) they always call first.  My parents don't though, they live about 8 miles away.

  • My il's live 2 hrs away and they call when they are on their way. It is super annoying and if we are busy they will hang out until we get home..

my parents don't either, but I don't care if they see my house in whatever condition it is. My MIL is a neat freak though, so I'd like some time to get my house in order.

Our families are anywhere between 20 min - 2 hours away. I can't imagine anyone showing up unannounced. Get togethers are planned days, if not weeks, in advance.

Do you really think they would just show up? 3 hours is a long drive, and how would they know if you were home or not? What if you had gone away for the weekend or already had guests?

I really think they would. I mentioned something about them letting us know in advance to DH (via text) and he basically said they probably wouldn't. DH talks to them enough that they would know what we would be doing on the weekends. MIL also told him last night that when they got settled in, she would come down every weekend for a month just because she was so much closer. Then she laughed. Serious? I don't know!

  • My ILs live about 15 minutes away and "drop by for some sugar" from the kids way to frequently.  I've asked DH to talk to them about it, but he's a wuss.

Now, when things like this come up, I usually say something to the effect of "This is a conversation that needs to be had.  You can do it or I will."  That's motivating for him.

  • I don't even stop by my very good friend's house without calling first.  "Dropping in" is rude 99% of the time I think.

  • We don't know anyone, family or friend, that drops by unannounced. Even just to say hi. I'm really happy we haven't had an issue with that too because its one of my biggest pet peeves. I had some friends that used to do that all the time when I was in my 20s. It was the worst because they would always catch me at a bad time. After turning people away at the door several times they finally got the hint.

If anyone ever did decide to just show up at our house now I would let them know right away to make sure they called first in the future.

  • We always know when our family will be coming as the visits are planned. My brother lives 1.5 hrs away and my parents live about 2.5 hrs away. I do not think it is unreasonable to ask them to give you advance warning. I also can't imagine someone dropping in who lives 3 hours away. What would they do if they got there and no one was home?

  • My mom's a little over an hour away and she never just "shows up."  She always calls and finds out when a good time is before coming.

I have been known to bring LBB up and surprise her though, but I usually call on my way up to make sure she's home.

  • My family is 12 hours away and Dh's is on another continent so no surprise visits for us. Even if we did live close to my I can't imagine them coming by without calling first. If we did live near DH's family they would all stopping by all day and night.
