Shopping Cart Help Needed!

Since DS is sitting unassisted pretty well now, I decided to try out my newly finished cart cover with him yesterday. First problem: the holes for the cart straps are too small, so I had to fold the back of the cover down to get the strap around him. NBD The big problem: how on earth do you keep the kid from leaning out of the cart? Maybe it was just b/c the cart we had was kinda small, but DS spent the entire trip turning around and leaning over to get whatever was in the buggy behind him. He had zero interest in the toys I had brought. I spent half the trip keeping him from tearing up my list and the other half keeping him from tearing up the things in the cart. And the whole time I had to keep a hand on him so that I could grab him if he leaned too far. Is there a trick to this that I'm missing? We have to go get groceries today, so I plan to take a napkin or two as paper for him to tear up/eat/write a novel on. I also think I'll take a blanket to stuff around him. Any other ideas?

  • I got this one:

I like it because I it has pockets in front for me to put stuff, hooks to hook toys on for her.. and extra padding for sides that can be lessened as get older.  It also has a buckle to buckle them in.

  • I don't have any ideas, but I hope it goes better for you today! I've been told our DD is very "chill" and I am starting to believe it. She just sits in the cart and looks around while the things go flying by, like people, items on the shelves, other babies, etc. Our biggest issue is her trying to eat the handlebar. lol!

  • Shopping at Target went much better than yesterday's Hobby Lobby trip. I think having a bigger cart helped a LOT. Yesterday I was buying picture frames and mats, which is why he couldn't play with the stuff in the cart even though it was easily within his reach. Today I was getting things that he could fiddle with and drool on, so it was NBD. Plus the things I didn't want him messing with (like hamburger meat) was no where in his reach. I thought about taking in his carrier so I could wear him, too. I decided not to since I already had my diaper bag, huge winter coat, two blankets for DS, and the cart cover. I don't mind wearing him except for days like today when I need to get things like a 35-40 lb bag of dog food in the cart.

  • I have problems with the cart, too. DS is definitely stable, sits unassisted, crawls, and has been pulling up all for a month. But he's a peanut, and so small in the cart! He leans to one side and I feel like I look like some negligent mother forcing a little baby to sit. Meanwhile, I KNOW he's fine. I stuffed my coat around him when I realized how small he actually is, but do I just keep holding off until he's bigger?

I have no problem wearing DS except for the trips like OP said, where I need to put heavy or big things in the cart.
