Cheerios vs. puffs

I wish I could make a CP. What's LO eating, Cheerios, puffs, both? I've been too scared to try Cheerios with DD because I'm so afraid of choking. I don't know that she'd be able to mash up the "harder" Cheerios with her gums the way she can the puffs since they are designed to melt quickly.

If you do feed LO Cheerios, did you start by cutting them in half first and then move to whole ones or did you just give whole ones from the start? I'm sure I sound paranoid, but DD just isn't all that great at eating "real food" yet, she's still kind of learning. I want to be able to give her Cheerios though because the puffs are WAY more expensive and she loves them so I'd be saving a lot.

Re: Cheerios vs. puffs

  • I started giving Cherios at breakfast. I too was scared of choking at first and broke them in half. He quickly figured them out and has no problem with them.

  • We so both. We started with puffs and once I was sure she knew how to "chew", we moved on to Cheerios. When we started them, I would either give them to her myself or put a couple at a time on her tray. I never cut them up though. It honestly never occurred to me to do that.

  • Cheerios dissolve in LOs mouth (brand name) pretty quicky (get your mouth drooly like a baby and try it, lol, I did).

None of my three have ever choked on cheerios, but DS choked on puffs until just a couple weeks ago.  Craziness, I would have thought the same as you.

  • Jackson gets both cheerios and puffs. When we very first started with cheerios, I broke them up. Now, I don't bother. He picks them up, one at a time, and takes a bite with his front teeth and then he laughs. Then he eats the other half and repeats with the next cheerio

  • We give her both too. LO had. Hard time with solids too, and still struggles some times. I started giving her Cheerios a few weeks ago, just gave her one at a time and watched her. She ate them no problem. If you are uncomfortable break them in half. But for me it made more sense for her to try it whole and just be closely monitored.

  • Puffs but only bc Madison spits out cheerios. I seriously have the only kid who hates cheerios! but she hates most food, so it doesn't surprise me!

  • We do both.  We started with puffs and moved to Cheerios quickly after.  He actually did better with Cheerios because he had an easier time swallowing them.  He never chewed the puff enough before he swallowed and would gag almost every time until a few months ago.  Now he does well with both.

  • We started with puffs but mainly do Cheerios now.  I never broke them in half, it never occurred to me to do so.  He will sometimes take an actual bite, but for the most part, he just mashes them with his gums.

  • He's been doing Cheerios for a few months now and never had a problem. I never thought to break them up. I just gave him his first handful of Kix yesterday and he loved them.

  • We give J both Cheerios and puffs. He has never had a choking problem. As a matter of fact, he tries to shove as many as possible into his mouth at the same time.

  • We never gave puffs. They seem so overpriced. We started giving cheerios months ago, when she had no teeth, and she's always done fine with them. I was nervous at first, so just kept a close eye on her, but never cut them.

  • Both...recently cheerios more often. He actually bits them in half, and eats one side at a time.

  • We do cheerios, my daughter has never had puffs. She does have mum mum's instead though, or no salt added rice cakes.

When I talked to my pediatrician about the cheerios(I had the same concern as you) he said that she would be fine, even if she swallowed one whole. The whole in the center of the cheerio would still allow her to breathe(scary, I know.)

I prefer cheerios because I feel like they are actually good for her vs the puffs being kinda of a snack food...the cheetos of the baby world, if you will. We do love mum mum's though-they melt very similarly to the puffs.  You could always try those instead!

  • Both. He eats Cheerios just fine and has been since about 9 months. No breaking them, I just give them to him whole. He ate puffs first though, starting around 6 months or so and I always broke those up before giving them to him. He got the hang of them pretty quickly. I think that's why I was ok with the Cheerios.

  • DD eats puffs and cheerios. I usually send a blend of the multigrain cheerios and a couple flavors of puffs for a snack at daycare.

  • We serve both Cheerios and puffs.  He likes them equally a lot!

Just a thought ... Cheerios have a hole in the middle, so if baby were to swallow it whole and it got "stuck", air would still be able to get through.  It would eventually turn to mush and everything would continue on as normal.

  • She prefers puffs but Cheerios are much cheaper so that's what she gets. They get soggy quick. We've never had a gagging episode from them and we have from lots of other things.

  • We find the off brand cheerios to be softer and more easily mushed and still have the whole grains. We prefer Kroger brand Toasted Oats.
