Trouble TTC

IUI #1 :(

Well I think this cycle was a bust.... I POS on Wednesday (11DPO) and again this morning (13DPO) and they were both negative.  I just called the RE to tell them but they still want me to come in for a blood test to confirm, that way I can stop taking the progesterone supps.

This was our first IUI and I know it can take a while but man is this frustrating.  I know IVF is much more invasive/serious/costly but is it wrong to feel like maybe we should just make the move?  My husband likes to look at the statistics and has actually done a whole worksheet on the cost v. chance of success and I think he wants put our money where we have the best chance of getting pregnant.  It doesn't help that we have to pay 100% for anything we do but my parents have offered to loan us the $$ (interest free!) if/when we do make the move.

Thanks for reading!

Re: IUI #1 :(

  • I'm sorry. While I haven't gone through this yet, if you have the money it does seem like IVF is the way to go.  I just depends on what your circumstance is. (Don't see a siggy.)

  • We just found out our first IUI didn't work either...hang in there.  That's awesome that your parents are going to help you out if you need it.  I'm not sure what your DX is, but give IUI a shot before rushing into IVF. Yes, the success rates are higher, but you don't want to go through all that if you don't have to.

  • I'm sorry your first IUI was a bust.

I sometimes wonder if I will feel like I wasted money on IUIs if we end up moving on to IVF (we are 100% OOP too).  I already feel like we have wasted a few thousand dollars between the IUI cycle I did with my ob/gyn and the terrible consult with the first RE we saw, but hindsight is 20/20.

Right now I have a RE I trust and I am going to trust his plan. He wouldn't recommend IUIs if there wasn't a chance that they would work.

  • So sorry that that IUI didn't work this month.  What type of meds are you on?  What does your RE think?

Could it be worth it to try injectibles (if you aren't currently on them) next cycle instead of jumping directly to IVF?

Don't feel bad at all for wanting to jump to IVF. After doing a bunch of TI cycles my RE wanted to skip IUI for IVF. We were unexplained and he said it was have us the best chances. Unfortunately we didn't have the money for IVF also would have been 100OOP so we had to go with IUI. We were successful eventually, but there's no saying you have to do IUI first. Depending on your circumstances and financial situation, I would go for it.

I hope this turns out alright, bumping from my phone. Good luck!

  • Sorry guys, I can't seem to get my siggy to work.  I thought it was my work blocking the ability to change it but I can't seem to get it to work on our iPad either.  So until I get that fixed..

DH and I been trying since August 2011.  RE is considering us unexplained IF. My progesterone on 7DPO came back 22, which I heard was good, but I have a history of spotting 3-5 days before AF (and sometimes as much as 7 days) so my RE started me on Prog. Supps last cycle.  DH has had 3 SA and they are all over the place.  The first was pretty bad (count 5mil, morph 1%, motility low) and my RE wanted us to go straight to IVF if the 2nd SA results hadn't improved significantly.  Well the 2nd came back A LOT better (count 49mil, morph 4%, motility normal).  We had a 3rd SA and the results were similar to the 2nd, thought morph dipped slightly.

So we decided to try 2 rounds of IUI (Femary & Trigger) and if they didn't work, move on to IVF.  I think we'll stick with this plan another round, it's just hard especially when everything seemed to go perfectly the 1st try.  I had 2 follies (23 & 26) and my lining was a little under 8. Sperm count was 17mil post wash and all other factors average.  I guess we'll talk more tonight.

Now to get that all into a siggy so I don't have to keep posting novels!

  • I'm so sorry that you got a BFN! Those always suck! I would definitely talk it over with your RE and get his input about going straight to IVF, but the bottom line is that you need to do what you feel is best! Good luck!
