When Did You First Leave Them Overnight?

My folks offered to keep our boys for a night or two to allow DH and I to get away for our sanity and to focus on our relationship.

I'd like to go ahead and book something so that it serves as a 'goal' or 'prize' for making it through however long it is before we go.

When did you first leave your LO's overnight?

Re: When Did You First Leave Them Overnight?

  • Mine are 8 months and we still haven't left them overnight, I have been gone two nights so far, DH has been gone a lot but never both of us together.  I don't know when we will, I would be fine leaving them now, as long as they were at our house and with someone we really trusted.  I probably wouldn't have felt comfortable doing this until they were sleeping through the  night and on a good schedule.  I do think it's a great idea for you to book something though and have a 'goal'! :)

  • My parents took them for New Years, so they were just over 8 months old. We had stayed at my parents overnight many times before this, so we had our "set -up" figured out like where to set up the monitor, the diaper changing station, bottle making, food, etc. They are taking them tomorrow night again - YAY! The only downfall with my parents taking them is we have to bring them there and it's an hour drive. It is totally worth it though. I don't think I would have been ready to have anyone take them before 7 months. Not because I don't trust other people, they just weren't totally sleeping through the night yet consistently and it sounded like a lot of work. It's still hard to really believe this, but remember that for other people, one night with your babies and possibly not getting sleep isn't a big deal for them. They don't have to do it every night, so you can't feel bad about that.

  • 8 months and we were so ready! My parents are very involved so I had no qualms about leaving them and we had a great time!
  • DH and I had to leave them for two nights at around 4 months.  We were both in an out of town wedding and it would have cost us a thousand dollars or so to bring the girls and a helper with us.  I was pretty miserable about it initially but in the end it was good for me and DH.

  • Ours were about a year old when we out of town for a few nights with just DS1, and left the twins with my parents. But, we hired a postpartum doula for a few nights when they were almost 2 months old, so we could get some sleep. We were so tired and losing our ability to function or speak during the day! We were home, but the doula fed and changed them for almost 8 hours straight while we slept. Glorious!

  • DH and I first left them overnight when they were 7 mos old for two nights to go to a dear friends wedding.  We missed them but we also had a wonderful time.  We had the grandparents stay at our house which, I think, made everything easier.

I started traveling for work as soon as I went back when they were 4 mos old but DH was at home so...kind of different.

  • Dh's parents took the kids overnight when they were 8 weeks old and they keep them overnight normally once a month. The kids do just fine staying with them and its nice for Dh and I to get time just the two of us.

  • Dh has gone away overnight a few times, but tomorrow night is the first time we will both be gone. ILs are staying at our house while we go on an overnight to NYC for our anniv!

  • Never. We have no family in the area and paying a sitter overnight is expensive.

I might see if I can get a friend to stay with them for our anniversary in May. The boys will be 23 months.

  • Mine will be 2 next month and we still haven't left them. We've tried to go away for a night on two separate occasions, and they got sick both times so we cancelled. Eventually it will happen! :)

  • Mine were 11mo when we left them overnight for the first time. Now at 2.5 we do it every couple months - either to ILs or my parents.
