I don't like the name Ally, but I think that Allie can stand alone. I just prefer it as a NN. It's probably best to give your daughter an option. KWIM?

Have you considered Ellie as FN? I think that it might stand alone a bit better than Allie.
As an Alison who is called Ali by most family/friends, I have to say no. I'm so glad Ali is not my actual name. I like having a formal name to go by and I honestly prefer Alison.
Not all kids HAVE to have a formal name. I like the spelling Allie if you choose not to give a formal name. It is up to you, but your child will always be asked if Allie is short for Allison/Alice etc.

All of this. I went by Alli until I graduated high school. After that, Alli felt too juvenile for me. Allison seems more fitting now.
I know an Ali (pronounced just like Allie) which is her full nsme. I admit I at first wondered why her parents didn't give her a full name like Allison. But Ali really suits her.
Long time lurker here.....but I just wanted to share that my 11 year old neice's name is Allie and she was just saying at Thanksgiving that she HATES her name. She wishes that her parents had named her Allison, Alexandra etc and just used Allie as a nickname. She said that people are always asking her what her "real name" is.

This is my thoughts on it. I also have a formal name that has an -ie nickname and I dropped that nickname in elementary school. BUT even still, in the male dominated field I work in, a lot of men refer to me as that nickname. I think that it can be detrimental professionally to not have something less diminutive depending on the field.
I have a friend named "Jessie"- when I'm mad at her I want to yell "Jessica"- but it isn't her name. So short names make it difficult to scold, but I don't think there's any issue with just using "Allie"
I always thought Allie/Ally was just a NN, until I met DH's cousin. Her name is just plain old Ali (pronounced Al-ee). Not a fan, I would prefer it as a NN for a longer name like Allison.

Drives me crazy that her name is a nn and doesn't have longer version!
But that's just my taste. Her parents have no problem with it!
