I have done a little bit of research, and I like Rumparooz. I'm a first time mom, not due until August. Does anyone have any feedback on Rumparooz. I'm planning on using these diapers on my future children so I'd like something that's going to last. Also, is it necessary to purchase the lil joeys or can i just fold down the diaper in the front for the umbilical cord?
Re: Rumparooz
My advice would be to buy a couple of different things before you invest. It's easier to sell off a few diapers you don't like instead if an entire stash you hate.
I agree with PP that you should try a few different kinds before investing in your whole stash. Rumparooz tend to run a little smaller, which is great for a small or skinny legged baby, but not so great for a tall or chunky thighed baby.
I thought for sure I would love BumGenius 4.0s when I first started CD'ing. Turns out I think they are just ok. I'm actually finding I like a whole different style of diaper (AI2s and prefolds with covers) instead of pockets.
As far as having Lil' Joeys...that again depends on your LO. You probably could just fold down the top if your LO is a bigger baby at birth. But you will likely have leaks out the leg holes for the first 2 to 8 weeks until your LO's thighs chunk up. My LO was 8lbs 3oz at birth and we couldn't use our one-size diapers until about 10lbs at age 4 weeks.
A lot of people either use prefolds and covers for the NB stage. Then you can use the prefolds as extra stuffing in your one-size pockets when LO gets bigger. Or you can buy NB diapers and then re-sell them or use them on your next baby. Since they don't get used for very long they have excellent re-sale value.
My LO is 6.5 weeks and just shy of 10 lbs. she only started fitting into the rumparooz pockets this week. She fit into her fuzzibunz one size as soon as the cord came off. I really like the RaR, it's super soft inside and is very adjustable (has 1more row of snaps than most). But I suggest a variety because like pp said, some one size run small, others run big, and you don't want to have to buy a whole new stash if they stop working for you.
We only had 4 lil joeys, and I wish I'd had a lot more. I washed every day while the cord was healing because they were perfect. Just yesterday after a second leak we decided to pack them away for the next baby. She's outgrown them in absorbency, but still had a snap left in size.
I will say, if you're considering using any prefolds or fitteds, the rumparooz NB cover was my favourite. It has 2 rise levels, 2 snaps for the cord, one for small fit. It still fits great, often still needing a snap down. It'll fit for a while yet.
I like them, don't love them. The rise is too short for my liking, it fits her funny and I don't think she'll make it to the max end of the weight range they advertise. They are great at absorbing pee fast to avoid leaks and the gussets are great for baby poo, but that's about it. The fit is funny on DD because she has chunky legs and a long thin torso. I only have 2 so I don't care, but I'd have been screwed if I made my whole stash out of them.
I have no input on Lil Joeys because DD was born at 10lbs so she fit right into the Rumparooz from day 1 and the rise was so short it didn't rub on her cord anyway.
I agree with PPs, buy a range for your stash. The perk of CDs is there is such a market for used you can sell what you don't like and buy what you do. I sold off a bunch of stuff recently and bought larger prefolds (which surprised me since they seemed too complicated when I started doing research) and more Alvas which seem to fit her best for her body type of all the ones I tried. It's hard to know what will work for you until you get going.
I just wanted to add that while I hated Rumparooz OS, I actually loved Lil Joeys a lot. They were the only newborn diaper we had that actually fit under his cord stump comfortably. We tried several newborn AIO's and used newborn prefolds with several brands of covers and they were our favorite by far. I was sad that they only worked for about six weeks until LO outgrew the absorbency.
RaR: I loved the fit when DD was an infant. Loved the gussets, the overall fit, but they were the bulkiest diapers I had. DD was chubby and RaR have a very low rise. That's the downside. She outgrew them by 7 months. I just tried them on her again (she's almost 26months), and they fit, but the rise is super low still on her even though she's slimmed out a lot. They're backup pocket dipes for me right now, but I'm not a big fan of the super low rise.
Lil Joeys: I had two for when DD was a newborn. We ultimately didn't get around to using CDs until DD was 4 weeks old, but by then she had outgrown the absorbency of the Lil Joeys (she was about 11lbs).
I like my OS RaR but they aren't my favorite. The material inside is super soft but the crotch area is wider than my BG. It says they have an extra row of snaps to fit a newborn but they would have been so bulky.
I agree with PPs. Try a variety of different diapers to see what you like. If it turns out you hate something resale value is usually really good.
First, buy a variety of diaper brands and styles to start. My favorites change all the time depending on growth spurts.
I really like the RaR pockets and covers. They still fit my LO great at 21 months, but she is fully unsnapped on the pocket (not on the cover). All of mine have been used on 2 children and have held up well. The only issue I have is the laundry tabs don't stick very well anymore- they work, but you have to be precise when you fold them.
