Infertility

Anyone else taking Clomid when you already ovulate?

Hi all.

I had my follow up appointment with our fertility specialist yesterday and after 4-5 months of TTC naturally since my laparoscopy in September he has put me on a plan of 1-2 months of Clomid, then 1-2 IUI's followed by IVF if that doesn't work. My recent 21-day progesterone results were 37 and all other tests have shown that I ovulate. I'm still not 100% sure why I would be put on Clomid when I don't appear to have ovulation problems. The doctor said it was to strengthen ovulation and support my luteal phase as I spot before my period??? Has anyone had any success from Clomid when they already ovulate? Any pregnancies? Thanks in advance :)

  • Siggy Warning

I also ovulate and they put me on Clomid.  I think it is just so that they can control it better.  I just figured that trying on my own did not work so I should do whatever the doctor says.  I did not get pregnant from the iuis but the ivf worked.  My sister did get pregnany with iui though.  Good luck to you!

  • Yes, it is quite common to go on Clomid when you ovulate on your own.  It is often the first course of action a doctor will try if a woman is not conceiving naturally and everything else seems to check out.  Like your doctor said, it can strengthen weak ovulation, lengthen the luteal phase, and it can also produce more than one follicle which gives the sperm more "targets" to hit so to speak (and which is also why it raises your risk of multiple births).

I was put on Clomid after 8 failed IUIs.  Unfortunately, it caused my body to NOT ovulate, even though I do ovulate naturally.  My RE added a second dose in the same cycle and that did make me ovulate, but I did not get pregnant and we moved on to IVF.  In fact, you will not find many success stories here -- we are all still trying; that is why we are here.  Try the Pregnant After IF board if you want success stories. Clomid does work for many women.

  • Yep, I have been on Clomid for all of my treatment cycles and I have no found issues at all and ovulate on my own. It helps with stronger ovulation and gives you the chance for more follicles as well.

However, no success story here. I did have 3 follicles every single IUI I had though.

  • I ovulate on my own and have been put on Clomid for 5 cycles (4 of them with an IUI). I was told that it was to control my ovulation better, timing wise and possibly produce more follicles. I unfortunately still only produced one follicle each cycle except for one month there was two.
