Preemies

For those who successfully bf...

Does LO latch as soon as you offer the boob or does it still take awhile for LO to figure out what to do?  DS' adjusted age is 2 weeks old but he was born at 32w5d and came home Jan 4.  He bfs very well with a strong latch, only I still have to do lots of tricks to get him to latch, and I don't think he understands letdown yet, as he gets annoyed when it doesn't come out strong immediately.  I know he's still young, but pedi says he is capable of successfully bfing.  Any advice?

  • Can you pump for a tiny bit until you letdown and then put him on so he gets milk immediately?

That's a good idea.  I will try that.  Then maybe as he gets older he will get the hang of it.

  • When H came home at 35 weeks adjusted, sometimes it felt like it took hours to get him latched on correctly. He didn't want to open his mouth. He mastered it at about 37-38 weeks adjusted. It was grueling! I also used hand massage to help me let down faster. We're still nursing, so it DOES get easier! Hang in there!

  • He's still very young gestational age so I would just give him some extra time to figure it out.  Also keep in mind that your body will likely get faster at letting down as you BF longer.  My boys kind of had the opposite problem.  They would get overwhelmed with the let down, choke, and brady.  By the time they were to their EDD they outgrew this issue.  wishing you lots of luck and just trust that it DOES get easier.
  • I still use a nipple shield sometimes with DD and it seems to help a lot. It will get better though if you stick with it. I still have to help DD latch but she gets better everyday!

    Good luck!
