Heart rate linked to gender

So, for the last couple years I've kind of tested out the old heart rate wives' tale with pregnant friends, family, and myself with DS. Maybe it's just coincidence, but EVERY SINGLE person who was pregnant with a boy had a baby with a lower heart rate, and everyone pregnant with a girl had a baby with a higher heart rate. I'd say it was around 10-15 people. My doctor said there is some accuracy to it, but of course its not 99% accurate or anything. So, im just curious for those of you who are STM+, was your baby's heart rate in the high or low range and did it go along with the wives' tale of boys being lower and girls being higher? I got to hear this baby's heartbeat at 10 weeks and the HR was 167, which would be considered "boy range" for this far along. DS HR was 169 at 9.5 weeks so i'm anxious to see if my predictions of another little boy are right!

Re: Heart rate linked to gender

  • With our loss in July, baby's HB was low, in the 140's, and genetic testing after my dc proved boy. Sister's lo had a high HB and turned out to be a girl. This LO's HB has been all over the place w/ the Doppler, so no guesses as of yet.

  • I may be wrong but isn't it anything under 140 is boy and anything over 140 is girl?

It's an OWT so it's a 50 percent chance anyway.

  • DS and DD both had heart rates of 165 to 170 throughout my pregnancies.

At my 10 week ultrasound, this baby had a heart rate of 167.

That's what I thought so I'm confused that OP said 167 is boy range.

We've seen/heard the heartbeat 3 times so far and everytime has been above 160 so we'll see!!

  • My sister is having a boy and his heart rate is high, around 160.

My DD's was around 160. My DS's was around 140. This baby was 150 at my last appt. Guess we will see in 9ish weeks. 50/50 chance right. ;)

ETA: I believe it is anything over 140 is girl, less is boy.

  • As others have said, the story goes that anything over 140 is a girl.

But I know of at least one pregnancy of a friend where the heartbeat was higher than 140 and it was a boy.  So idk how accurate it is.

That being said, my mother swears by this.  lol.

The heart rate is higher early on..it levels out around 12 weeks, and thats when the "140" rule applies. DS was always right at 140 or lower from 13 weeks on.

  • Evidently, heart rate used to be how doctors determined the sex.  My parents were told that I was a boy, based on my heart rate.  My grandparents had already bought me all these boy clothes and everything.  But surprise!!!  Out popped a cute little red-headed girl instead! Good thing my parents decorated the nursery gender neutral I suppose.  :)

  • Didn't work for my DS. We'll see if it works for this one. I, too, thought the hr slows down at 12 weeks and its too early to do the test at 9 weeks?
  • Many people have told me it will be a boy including my sis in law who has two boys.. Our LO heartrate has been in the. 150s since 7 weeks, including lady week at 13 weeks. My newphew's heartrates were also 150s range. I also read 140 or higher is a girl, sooo I am giving zero merit to this old wives tale and trying to patiently wait a few more weeks until we know for sure. I also read that high heartrates may be a result of mother dehydration. Not sure if this is totally true but who knows.
  • My son's rate was always around 140 160. He was/is a boy. They have actually done studies on this and there is NO scientific correlation at all.

  • If the 12 week/140bpm rule were accurate, I'd be having a girl.  We've been measuring consistantly in the high 150's, low 160's.  We'll see in a month and a half!

  • This baby has been consistently 160-164.

DS was in the 160s also, until about week 20-25 then it was in the 140-150 range.  But, still in the "girl" range.  Hes most definitely a boy.

  • The baby's heart rate peaks at 8 weeks around 170-180 regardless of gender, and then slowly lowers, so at 10 weeks you can't even begin to guess where it will end up.

That being said, DS's heart rate wasn't in "boy range" (meaning around 140...167 is considered girl range) until well after 20 weeks when we already knew the sex anyway.  His was 160-170 until about 22 weeks, when it was down to around 145.    This baby is around 176 at 9 weeks, DS was 181 at 10 weeks.

  • It was true for both of my kids. I don't know that DS's was ever above 150 (even at 8 week u/s) and DD's was always high.
  • You're the first early 180/boy I've seen. Cool.

Mine was 186 at 8w, 183 at 9w and 180 at 11w. I was just getting confident that we were having a girl.

    We shall see...
