Separation Anxiety?

When did your LO start showing signs up separation anxiety?  The past few days if I don't stay in DS's room until he is completely asleep he will wake up, look for me, and if I'm not there has a complete melt down.  Also if I walk out of the room and he can't see me he will start to yell or cry.  I try to walk back in and show him I'm still here but it hasn't really helped.  He doesn't do it with DH at all but he will watch him walk around the room or leave in the morning so he's very aware of where we are.  I thought separation anxiety wasn't until he was closer to 6 months?  Any advice?  It took me almost an hour to get him down for his nap!

I don't know if it's separation anxiety, but G has started getting upset when Grammie comes to watch her. I feel like G knows that I'm leaving if Grammie is holding her. It breaks my heart. Hope it doesn't get worse!

We've been dealing with this on and off for about two months now. Playing peak-a-boo helps a little. It helps him learn that even when he can't see your face you're still there. I'll also go in and out of L's room in different intervals. Like, I'll lay her down in her crib with a toy and go do something in the next room, but then come back after she's cried for a minuet or two, or even if she isn't crying. Or I'll talk to her from outside the room, so she can hear my voice, but not see me. At night we did ST at 6m so she would learn to self sooth. I know it's not for everyone, but it's worked well for us.

ETA: I don't think it's recommended to ST before 6m, though, so your little guy might be young for that still.

Thank you ladies.  It seems to be the worst around nap time.  I just spent 30 minutes leaning over his crib and rubbing his back until he fell asleep.  The minute i tried to stop and walk away because I thought he was asleep it was an instant scream fest.  He doesn't do this at bedtime at all though so I don't know what's going on.  At night I put him down completely awake and walk out of the room and 5 minutes later he's out like a light.  I'm really hoping this is just a phase or maybe teething related?
