Opinions on girl name

Looking for some opinions on a girl name.  My husband loves the name Cassidy.  I don't dislike it, but I love the name Cecilia.  I think he would be totally ok with Cecilia, but deep down I know he likes Cassidy better.  Here's my question--we have a very Irish last name, and Cassidy is obviously an Irish name.  Would any of you take the origin of the last name into consideration when choosing the first name?  What would be your choice between Cecilia and Cassidy?

Re: Opinions on girl name

  • I prefer Cecilia over Cassidy (the names and the songs)

The way a FN/LN combination sounds is important but loving the first name is more important to me.  I wouldn't have names that rhymed or were too alike(which is why I can't use the name Luca - our last name is DeLuca) but nationality clashes don't really bother me.

  • Yes, I for sure take the origin of my last name into consideration.  I like a lot of Irish names but the sound sort of silly with my Spanish last name.

I slightly prefer Cecilia to Cassidy. Do either of you like Cecily?  It combines both sounds.

  • We took the sound of our last name into account, but not the origin, although our name is pretty basic English. Sometimes I do hear names where the first and last name are obviously from different nationalities, but with such a multinational society, it's becoming more and more common. Personally I prefer Cassidy and to be honest, it's not so obviously Irish as to make me think about it.

  • I prefer Cecilia to Cassidy.  Other options might be Cassandra (Cassie) or Celia.

  • I do not like Cassidy at all. I would definitely go with Cecilia and not worry too much about the last name. As PP have mentioned, mixed backgrounds are so common now that I don't think anyone would think it didn't go with an Irish last name.

Also, you say you think your husband would be totally okay with Cecilia. Have you talked about it yet? If he really doesn't like it, I'd set it aside. Either go with Cassidy, which you don't dislike, or find something else you can agree on.

ETA: I know, I totally just contradicted myself. Sorry.

  • I think Cecilia blows Cassidy out of the water.  And I don't think it matters which one you choose with an Irish ln.  Have you considered Cecily?  Kind of a combination between the 2 names...

  • Thank you all for your opinions!  I had not considered Cecily before, but will definitely mention it to MH.  He has told me that he would be fine with Cecilia, but I can just tell that it's not his favorite.  He has shot down all of my other favorite girl names, and so far, these are the only 2 that we can both semi-agree on.  We are team green and totally agree on a boy name, so maybe this will be a non-issue after all!

  • My vote is for Cecelia :-)

  • I prefer Cecilia over Cassidy!
  • I much prefer Cecilia. It's so pretty and Cassidy sounds dated to me.
  • I prefer Cassidy, partially because I love the Cassie/Cass nickname. Two names that are somewhat in between would be the previously suggested Cecily and Cassandra.
  • Cecilia is a gorgeous name.  Cassidy is okay and the nn are nice, but so are the nn for Cecilia.

  • They are both beautiful names. IMO I'd go with Cecilia
