ZipadeeZip or Merlin?

Hi Gals :)

So last night, as LO was trying to go to sleep in her swaddle... and GRUNTING as she is trying to break free.... I was reading the LNCI board and....... there were a couple posts re: Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep suit and the ZipadeeZip... NEITHER of which I had heard of but IMMEDIATELY went to check them out!!

My question is - has anyone used these... and which one is closer to a swaddle?? And how the heck do they work? I see that the Zipadee thingy majig is a Star pattern... and that the Merlin is thicker... but wondering if any of you have used them yet or have any suggestions? The swaddle has been just about the only thing to help calm our colicky LO, so I am SUPER hesitant to get rid of it, but I know she is growing out of it.

All these fun things for our babies... I just don't know what to buy or use! I just want her to SLEEP!!!

TIA!!!

  • I have not tried either of these but in looking online at them I wonder how either of them really keep LO's arms from flapping around in her face (which is our issue when she isn't swaddled).  In researching, I came across the Woombie, it looks to me like the woombie will keep the arms away from her face and since its one solid piece (no separate piece on the arms like the sleepsack swaddle and swaddle me thing) she should (hopefully) not be able to break free.  I ordered a woombie, it just seemed to make more sense for a real swaddle breaker, I'll try and remember to report back once it arrives!

I guess this depends if you are looking to ween off swaddling or keep swaddling but prevent breakouts. My LO is rolling so the wombie isn't safe . I ordered a Merlin suit. Doubt it will work , but I will keep the board posted !

  • Coming out of lurking to report on the Merlin...

The Merlin has worked great for us transitioning out of the swaddle. The thickness of it keeps baby from startling herself. We've been using it about a month now, and as she's gotten bigger and stronger, she can almost get her hands in her mouth in it, but it doesn't seem to be disturbing her sleep. I'd recommend it!

Good point, my LO doesn't seem close to rolling over so I think we still have at least another month of swaddling.  It sounds like the Merlin might be better for the bridge between swaddling and weaning.  I will be interested to hear how the Merlin suit works for you!

  • We started using it a few weeks ago when my son rolled onto his tummy while swaddled. It took two days and one night for him to get used to it. He has not slept on his back since he rolled last week. Each time I put him to sleep on his back he would immediately roll over. I flipped him back onto his back a few times and helped him fall asleep on his back, but five minutes later he would wake up and I would go in to find him on his tummy. So I stopped fighting it and let him sleep on his tummy. He can roll both ways in the Zipadeezip and their website says its safe to use if they can roll. I feel comfortable with my son sleeping on his tummy in it. I highly recommend it and use it not just when he is in his crib, but even when we go out!

  • We liked the Merlin with LO. I forget what age we started, but she transitioned well. Plus in New England the nights get cold. We stopped using it when the warmer weather started.
  • We used the Zipadeezip when DS started rolling in his swaddle. We also moved him to his crib at that time. It really helped -- he slept longer.

When he physically outgrew it, we transisitioned to footsie pajamas, which wasn't a problem. I recommend this product.
