Thanks Chunstad for asking! We had a really good time but the damn projector wouldn't work and I did get distracted and wasted some valuable class time trying to get it to work. I just really wanted them to see a video and actually get to see some pictures of Mars and the rover so they had some context. The projector worked in the morning when I tested it out.
The kids did seem extremely excited about the topic and very interested. We had some really good discussions and I was surprised at how much they already knew. Overall I think it was a hit even with the tech issues. They also loved the NASA swag we handed out at the end. I can't wait to do this again but I will definitely have some rover models and Mars pics available in case I have technical difficulties again.
I'm glad that it went well, even with the misstep. Damn technical issues! Did you end up taking out some of the higher level information that you were debating on taking out? Hopefully you didn't, kids love that stuff and eat it up.

Way to go, teacher!
Thanks so much Chunstad and Super!!
Chunstad,I did leave some of the higher level info in as you suggested and it went really well! For example, one thing I left in was the level of radiation on Earth vs. Mars. I kept it to UV radiation and explained it to them in the terms of "that is what causes you to get sunburned when you don't wear sunscreen". I asked them if Mars had higher or lower radiation than Earth. They thought lower since it was further away from the sun. I could then explain that radiation levels were actually higher because Mars has a thinner atmosphere than Earth. They seemed awed by that. It was soooo much fun and thanks again for all of the suggestions!

That's a real cool fact, and a good guess by those kids. I would have guessed the same.
Hmm, do I sense a change of career???
