Cloth Diapering

Is this an ammonia issue? lost...

Hi All. Sorry to add another wash issue post...I am a newbie and have only been cding part time to get the hang of it, and until I finish my stash. I bought a few 'like new' diapers on diaperswappers, and a few new. Washed in rockin green and air dryed, they all smelled pretty good but a few have a lingering smell in the background. Specifically one like new (and it really does look like new) Bg 4.0 and some used babykicks hemp inserts.

Well the problem is after using that like new diaper/and or the hemp inserts I can barely walk in the room the smell is so bad. I was worried that's just how diapers smelled after 12 hours, but when I used a new bg and inserts there is no smell.

So long story short I re-washed (hemp seperate) in rocking green, hot water, pre rinse and extra rinse, and added vinegar to the hemp. Crossed my fingers that would work, but the same strong smell after using. Any ideas? thanks so much.

Re: Is this an ammonia issue? lost...

  • Probably.  I would do another wash with just hot water and a few tablespoons of bleach.  This helps me feel better about germs and stink when buying used.  Whenever I have lingering smells, I run another cycle with a little bleach.  A little shouldn't do any damage every once in awhile.
  • yeah i dried them in the sun all day yesterday. then used the bg 4.0 and it still reeked of ammonia? (i think thats what it is) this morning. when i used a new diaper there was hardly any smell.

so my question is how do i fix any lingering ammonia issues? this was a like new diaper i bought so i never expected to have issues. the hemp is not as new, and it also smells terrible.

ok i will try another cycle with bleach. thanks

  • Rockin green did not work at all for me. It gave me repelling issues within a couple weeks and did not get my diapers clean.

I'd boil the inserts with some dish soap (Dawn is the best) since you're just talking about a few diapers and suspect they're not clean. Don't boil the shells - it will ruin anything with snaps or elastic. Then run them through a couple of rinse-and-spin cycles.

Then I'd switch detergents. I used up the rest of the RNG on clothes.

  • Do you have hard water?  If so the vinegar will actually make ammonia problems worse.

I agree with PP. Boil the problem insert, should fix the problem. I'd also stop using rockin green. It's known for causing stink issues.
