If it's twins, can I be showing??

Cause I definitely feel like I am!! It really doesn't seem like bloat. I had some fat on my stomach left over from my first pregnancy, so I know that's helping, but I feel like I am showing a tad. Parts of my lower abdomen feel kind of hard.

Another question. It probably sounds really stupid.. please don't be mean cause I'm really curious! But really, since I'm having twins and I'm 7 weeks, but there's two babies, two sacs, etc, is it like I'm 14weeks? How much bigger is my uterus when pregnant with two compared to just one? Is it double?

Re: If it's twins, can I be showing??

  • Honestly, i would check w/ dr re: the hardness.

Regarding size: everything is a lot bigger at 14 weeks (more fluid, much larger fetus, etc.), so 2@7 weeks =/= 1@14wk.

Check out the weekly fruit equivalents and any of the weekly development trackers (this is just one; there are many https://www.babycenter.com/my-pregnancy-today-app) to get an idea what is going on each week.  For twins, it's basically the same (a little more space, greater nutrition needs, etc., but largely the same).

how can it be the same, if there are two babies with two bags of water? Two placentas? I understand what you mean about them being small now, but later I think that it would be much different?

It's not anything I'm worried about, the firmness, it's just on my lower abdomen under my fat. If I press. Like how it feels when you begin to show.

  • I know that two babies measuring 7 weeks isn't the size of one baby at 14 weeks, but I thought that maybe with the extra water, and sac and everything if you combined it, it would measure close to the size of one at that time. Does that make sense?

Lol I'm thinking no it would just measure a bit bigger I'd google maybe see some pictures but if it is double could you imagine carrying to 40 weeks and measuring 80? Ouch!
maybe I feel this way because my SIL was HUGE with her twins! Her stomach size was literally double, if not more, than the size of mine at 38 weeks. Her twins were both eight and a half pounds!

17 pounds of baby!! Woah and fluid and placenta! How long did she carry them? Also my uterus cried!
38 weeks 6 days! Had to have a c section cause both were breech. They would have just kept growing!!
  • As my doctor told me today "twins are usually significantly smaller at birth. Where a single baby can weigh around 7.5 lbs, twins will usually only weigh 5.5-6." then he reminded me these are just average and not to worry if I differed.

so, you will carry slightly more weight, but its not going to double completely.

did you see my post above? :)

I think the reason most twins are that small is because women either go into labor really early, or get induced/ have c sections a lot earlier. I am going to try my hardest to keep them in as long as possible. My ob said if I am healthy and baby A is head down I can wait until I go into labor on my own.

I found out a week ago and have common, mid symptoms. The usual.
  • I think mine is only bloat right now but not one pair of my jeans fit and I don't expect them to again so I put them away in bins.  By the time the bloat goes down I expect to really be showing.  I already bought 3 pairs of maternity pants and will probably break those out in the next 2 weeks.  I have been wearing leggings under tunics for 10 days now because I can't find anything that fits.

  • Oh honey. You are 7w, you just will measure bigger.

With subsequent pregnancies your body knows what to do so it kinda takes the shape earlier. It's not a baby bump yet since they are still behind your pelvic bone, but your body knows what to do.

  • I don't know much about twin pregnancies, but I think not, because I think your uterus is still in the pelvis. But maybe it pops out of the pelvis sooner with twins. You'd just have to ask your doctor!

But, it is not the same as double. Even if the babies are 8 lbs at the end, they basically are more squished in there than a singleton is.

  • I didn't "show" with twins until 17 weeks and I am a size 2 to 4.

When my doctor gave me a pelvic exam at my first appointment he could tell My uterus was a bit larger, but those are practiced hands.
