Expecting small babies? Preemie dipes?

We're expecting twins and the average twins are born at 5 lbs. - sometimes bigger, but often smaller too.  We're doing GMD Prefolds and Bummis & Thirsties covers at first.  We're ordering orange and yellow edges, but I'm debating having some preemie sized ones on hand as well. The yellows say they start at 6 lbs.  DId any of you moms have twins or were you expecting small babies?  Did you prepare to take home a 5 pounder or smaller by having XS dipes on hand? How many?

Re: Expecting small babies? Preemie dipes?

  • I have been CDing twins since they came hone from the hospital 1 1/2 weeks ago at  37weeks, 4#11oz/5#8oz.  i am still working on what works, but while the fmd preemie prefolds fit well, they are saturated at every changing.  the nb ones are bulky but a lot more absorbent.

  • Just to add, my LO was 7lbs 11oz and her bummis whisper NB cover was too big and rubbed her cord. I found my rumparooz cover fit much smaller. The lil joeys AIOs are a bit pricier, but they fit tiny babies really well. I never used the smallest setting, and it still fits at 6 weeks. I think it would be great for a preemie or small baby-you'd get a lot of use from it. It's trim, easiest to use and baby feels dry.

  • FYI regarding covers - the Bummis Super Brite newborn is cut much smaller than the Bummis Super Whisper size newborn. You'll probably be happier with the SB for those first few weeks.

This. I also found having some aios on hand was awesome for helpers and really sleep deprived dads those first few weeks with twins :

  • And fwiw, I had 6.9 and 6.12 twins in the end and they were swimming in the Thirsties xs.

Yes - I found the Thirsties XS to be cut really wide. My singleton was a pretty average birth weight (7.5) and this cover was huge on her the first couple of weeks. Proraps newborn were what we ended up using the most.

If you're wanting to order from GMD, check out her comments on covers. They are quite exhaustive. I think she mentions that other teeny covers she carries are the Bummis Original newborn and the Litewrap preemie.

  • DD was 5 lbs 12 oz at birth and came home at 5 Lb 5 oz.  We needed preemie diapers for her but figured we'd just start  CD when she was bigger...had I known we'd be in sposies for 3 weeks solid I would have picked up some preemie diapers!!

  • My little girl was 5.12 when she was born and dropped to 5.4, we had orange edge workhorse diapers and kawaii p&ns and she still can't wear either of them because her legs are so small. I quickly bought up any lil joeys I could find off ebay and diaperswappers and those are what she is still in now. They are nice and trim and even my husband can figure them out which is nice. We recently had a problem where she'd pee too much and leak when she'd sleep 3 hours at night but thanks to ITK we had no problems last night with adding a folded wipe (baby wash cloth) into the diaper for extra absorbency. I'd highly recommend getting at least a few of these for when your out or someone else is helping with them. I got almost all of mine from diaperswappers for about 10 dollars a piece including shipping  and they are all in great condition and I'm sure I will be able to resell them for about what I paid for them if I decide not to hold onto them for future babies.
  • My LO was 5lbs 11oz at birth and 5lbs 4oz when we brought him home.  I've found GMD workhorse fitteds and prefolds (newborn) work great.  I also like Lil Joey's and Kissaluvs.

I also have BG newborn and swaddlebees simplex but they don't fit yet.
