more sleep help

We bedshare and DS2 has been going to bed when I go to bed at 10ish.  He would typically wake 2 times per night to eat, and wake up for the day around 9 am.  DS1 is on a similar schedule and bedshares with DH.  (this is a temporary situation...hopefullly!)

Anyways, for the past 2 nights, I've been sick and have gone to bed around 8 pm with DS2.  Low and behold, he slept through the night!  I'm thinking that it would be ideal for him to go to bed at 8pm from now on (plus its much more normal of a bedtime).

So, my question is how do I go about putting DS2 to bed at 8, but I still go to bed at 10?  I'm thinking that I should try to get him into the arms reach mini co sleeper, but am open to better suggestions.  I dont feel safe at all putting DS2 to sleep in my bed without me being there.  He takes most naps either in a carrier, in my arms, or in the car, so this is sort of new for us.

At the age of your LO I remember that I would get my daughter to sleep by going to bed with her, but then I would sneak out once she was asleep (15-20 minutes later) before returning to bed at my normal time. We put bed guards on our bed so that she couldn't roll out and that made it safe enough for me. Afterwards we moved our mattress to the floor and put a blanket next to the bed, so at most she would only go down a couple of inches and would 'land' on a soft blanket. She's done it a few times and it's been fine.

Right now, we have DS starting in his own bed (crib mattress on the floor) until Ii'm ready for bed, then he joins me at the next wake up. But when he was having a harder time and I wanted to just start in our bed, I would just bring my iPad or laptop to bed and browse, take care of email, watch Downton Abby, or whatever until I was ready to sleep.

Thanks for the replies!  i think we will try a few different methods until we find one that works the best!  I'd loooove to go to bed when he does though.
