October 2011 Moms

possible dumb question and hurt feelings

So LO has an incredibly vocabulary, he tries to say everything we do and says 20+ words clearly! He constantly chatters and is very friendly and talkative with everyone. I'm a chatter box so he comes by it naturally.

I know I'm being overly sensitive about this but he will NOT say Mommy/momma.  The kid said blueberry last week and taco yesterday but won't say momma! I started patting my chest and saying mommy and then patting his chest and saying Graydon. He is now saying Graydon and making Stick out tongue for mommy. Logically I know he is not doing this on purpose, but to be honest it kind of hurts my feelings. But now with the vocabulary explosion I have noticed he doesn't say anthing with a m. He makes the mmmm sound when he is eating but that's it. This is probably a really dumb question but does that mean anything? Feel free to tell me I am being neurotic and reading too much into it.

  • You are being neurotic and reading too much into it. :P

Really though, it's not a big deal. Kids say different words at different times. N says dada a million times more than mama but she definitely dishes out the cuddles and the kisses. There's not to be jealous or worried about. He'll get there eventually. He knows you're mom.

  • E has never said mama if that makes you feel better. She knows who mama is but won't say it.

  • It means he loves tacos and blueberries more than you. Just kidding! Rocco's first word was ma-ma. And now he doesn't say it at all (and only says about three other words consistently). Don't worry about it.
  • Lopes had suggested saying "mama" into their hands, so I tried it with DD. The next week she said mama! Now this could have been a complete coincidence, but it worked for me.

Try to think of the big picture though - they all learn different words at different times and speeds. Eventually he will say it, and then he'll being saying "mom" 8 bazillion times while pulling on your pant leg and you'll be saying to yourself "I wanted this?"  Just kidding...kinda. I know it hurts your feelings, but it doesn't mean anything.  DS usually only says it to get my attention or when he is really upset.

This is a good point too! N says "maaaaam" when she wants my attention or wants something haha

  • I know I'm reading too much into the mommy thing but didn't know if him not saying anything with M was a big deal. I'm so thankful I don't have the clingy kid that won't go to anyone other than mommy/daddy and I love seeing how much LO loves DH.....but I HATE that I am a little jealous of it. He gets so excited to see DH, when I pick him up from daycare he doesn't want to leave and sometimes throws a fit. It doesnt help that the teacher jokes DAILY about how LO is so excited to see DH and says daddy all day but never mommy. Thanks lady that's hilarious! .....as I am writing this I realize how petty I sound. Tongue Tied I hate when that happens.

  • LBB can say mama.  But he only does it when he's desperate.  Like if DH won't give him something and I'm in the kitchen busy. and he feels like he's being ignored.

Otherwise everything is "da da."  When DH leaves the room?  "Da da"  When he wakes up in the morning? "Da da"  When we leave for daycare? "Da da"  When I pick him up from daycare? "Da da"  He loves to look at pictures and will point out DH in everyone.  But if I ask him where Mama is?  He looks at me blankly.

  • It doesn't mean anything. DD says da da, daddy, papa, and poppy, but will not say mama. If she gets hurt, or needs comforting, it is me that she comes to, so that makes up for the verbal snub.

This is how DD was. She didn't call me Mama to my face until she was almost 2. She used it to ask for me when I wasn't around though. She is now the most articulate 3ish year old I know.

  • I wouldn't worry.  DD does the same thing.  She'll say other words, but I never hear her utter my name.  I've heard her say it before, but it's once in a blue moon.  I know it'll come eventually.

  • DS hasn't said Mama in a really long time. I am not too worried about it because I know there will come a day when all I will hear is "Mama, mama, mama..." and on and on.
