Um, yeah. Like at least an hour a night. Maybe more.
I went to a private school though; don't know about the public schools when I was in grade school. Also, I was kind of shocked by the grading scales compared to my schools. Mine was 95-100 as an A, 90-94 was a B+, 86-90 was a B, 80-85 was a C+ etc.)
So I think I'm not exactly representative.

I'm 39 and I had homework from kindergarten. I'm also an elementary school teacher and our district makes homework mandatory. We MUST assign 10 mins of homework per grade per core subject. We have to turn in our homework assignments to our principal. If we are not giving enough, we are scolded, lol.
I definitely had homework, and I don't feel bad for kids who have it now. It's pretty much one of the few ways working parents can be involved in their children's academia. While I don't think children should drown in their homework, I do think that daily homework is one way to prevent us from falling behind other countries in terms of standards.
Most elementary kids get homework now. However, most of the time it's only in one subject. Like Mondays and Wed are math and Tue and Thurs. are reading/language. It's just to get them in the habit of doing homework. When I taught, most parents asked me to give more than I did but, I felt like kids needed their down time as well as their extra stuff after school.

IT was a huge debate at the P&F at my school about if and when. I think in about grade 2 or 3 I was given about 5 sums and 5 spelling words to learn every few days. REALLY not much.?
Homework and projects to hand in that had to be researched at home really only started about grade 6.
I didn't mind, I actually liked it. ?Then again I was the sicko who got a kick out of being top of the class :-)
Natalie has homework in kindergarten. On Monday she get's 4 pages that need to be done, front and back, that are due Friday and she has a book report due every Monday.
My first grader has homework every night. While its not a lot - I still think its crap. A 6 year old does not need to be doing homework. I don't think it should start until 4th or 5th grade. Let kids be kids - they have the rest of their lives to work.

I had homework starting in 1st grade. At that point, it was usually reading a chapter of a book or something that took very little time. In middle school (grades 5-8) we had 3-4 hours a night! High school was a relief when we went down to 2-2.5 hours a night!
