DD does ok with her Nuby sippy, but we happen to have a straw cup so I am trying that out, too. She just seems to chew on the straw, not suck. For those that use the straw sippys, do they just "get it" after awhile?
My lo took right to a straw from the first try (week sy of 7 months). However those Nuby straws are so fat and big I bought one and all she knows how to do is chew on it. Give her any other NORMAL size straw and she drinks like a champ! We use lil grippers straw cup from Playtex works great! Also look into innobaby straw cup. It's a weighted straw that allows ALL the liquid to be drank. From my experience all the straw cups we've used always leave an ounce or so because they don't reach the bottom.
My son does better with the straw sippy over the one without. He has been able to use it from day one where the other he doesn't lift high enough to get the milk/water just like when he uses his bottle. Yes..it's terrible my son still can't hold his own bottle up when sitting down.

DS can't either - I was starting to worry! I have the same problem with the sippy cups - he'll hold it but I have to tip it back for him so he actually gets the liquid from it. I'll have to try a straw cup soon, it sounds like that will be much easier for him.
We go together like a wink and a smile. June 27, 2009
We tried the straw ones and he loves them. At first he didn't understand it but my husband opened the cup, showed him inside and dipped the drinking end in- closed the cup and then he figured it out right away.
Only trouble with the straws is cleaning them... hoping to find some sort of pipe cleaner ish tool today...
We had the same problem... he wouldn't tip the reg. sippy up enough to get anything from it.
He has just figured out in the last 2 days how to tip it up properly... awesome because now i don't have to pick and choose between cups.
I think I have the straw cup by munchkin I think. It's the no drip where he has to suck. Nice thing is due to the straw he doesn't have to lift the cup so it's worked since day one.

Ditto the Playtex Little Grippers. We had the Nuby one to start with also and DS wasn't getting it. Someone recommended the Little Grippers and he got the straw concept immediately. The Little Gripper cups let you squeeze a little water into the straw so they can feel the water and know what happens when you suck on the straw. After I did that a few times, he totally got how it works. I also agree on the weighted straw cups. We're have the ZoLi Bo and it's awesome:

Dr. Browns makes a mini brush to clean their bottle parts and I use that on DS's sippy cup straws. You can get a pack of three or four for pretty cheap.
We have the Zoli straw cups, which are great but now my son has found that he enjoys completely filling his mouth up with water and blowing raspberries so drinking has turned into a very wet affair for him and all around him. I guess they work too well.

This is the one we have. I do like it. Our straw is yellow and textured. I half wonder if she thinks it is a noodle.

My DD seemed to pick it up pretty quickly - though she sometimes does prefer to chew on it. I think with time and practice (and getting the reward of what's inside), she will get it.

Hahaha then I bet you will get a kick out of this. My son does drink his water..then he chews on it..then finds it funny to flick the straw part and it always sprays me with the water that was sitting on top. Thank goodness for the little cleaner brushes because he even gets food all jammed up in the straw.

DS#2 grabbed his older brother's thermos, which has a straw and he just took right to it. He prefers the thermos to any other sippy now. But like previous posters, he does like to get a mouth full of water and spit it out;)
He seemed to think the straw sippy was more of a toy at first. When we would go out to eat I would sip my water from the cup and be sure to have him watch. Then I would hold the cup down to his level (covering the top with my hand otherwise he'd start trying to splash) and he would try to sip from that.
I found it worked best with a pretty full cup (not as far for the water to go to get to his mouth), and it took him about a week to really "get it". Once he started to get it with the regular straw when I would give his straw sippy he would drink first then play with it, instead of only playing with it.
My dd was drinking fr a straw at 8. 5 to 9 months... What i did was put juice in the straw and controlled flow with my finger over the end .. Put the other end in her mouth.. Id let a little into her mouth so she knew shed get juice.. After a couple of weeks she got it!

Now, if I could just get DS to stop throwing his cups, which, apparently, is the most fun game ever!
