Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sleep training 7 1/2 month old

My daughter slept through the night from about 12 weeks until 6 months old.At 6 months she got sick and just recently got back to herself and finally popped her tosoth out. I have been trying the last few weeks to get her back to sttn. She is now back in our bed. I didn't want to let her CIO because it is heart breaking!! But we started tonight and it took just under an hour. My question is more related to what you do if she doesn't stop crying during your visit.I go in every 5 minutes to give her the paci and pat her back. Right after I put the paci in she starts screaming again.. am I doing this right or am I just failing at sleep training? I just don't want her to have bad sleeping habits when she is older!

  • Mine LO was the same way, she would pause her crying when she saw me but start again as soon as I was walking back out. The first night was the worst. Took 40 min, but then she slept from 8 to 6. Night 2, she only cried for 12 min, and night 3 under 10 min. Good luck, first night is the worst but you baby will get the hang of it and soon won't cry at all when its bed/nap time.

  • Yeah, completely normal that they seem to get more upset by your presence than comforted. I used to not let him go past 10 minutes without a visit for awhile, but I figured out that I was making it worse. I stuck to the plan and didnt pick him up unless I thought he needed something. After he started STTN regularly I actually have gone back to picking him up if he is completely hysterical and sitting with him and rocking him until he calms down. When I put him back down he usually goes right to sleep until morning. So after the initial sleep training for a week or 2, he "gets" that nighttime is for sleeping now and I can break the rules a little bit and still have success.

  • I would maybe increase the time between you go in. I noticed she cried more when I went in so I tried to hold off longer. I also did not reinsert pacifier.

  • We've done The Sleep Easy Solution as far as CIO, which uses check-ins. We stopped doing the check-ins because it made him way more upset then if we just let him be. Night 1, took almost the full hour. Night 2, whined not screamed for about 10min. Night 3, he whined for about 20min but then went to sleep. I also use this during his naps just to make sure we're super consistent. For his naps, he'll whimper for a few min and then play in his crib for about 20min until he puts himself to sleep. At night he'll sleep 11-12hrs and he'll nap for about an1hr to 1.5hrs. I do know that the book we have says not to touch them because they think you're going to pick them back up. Maybe she's just confused. If it were me, I'd talk to her and put her paci back in and then leave without patting. Just remember it's always your own decision on how to handle your baby. If it's not working out and she's getting overtired you can always start again in a few weeks.

  • I recommend ditching the pacifier.  She will keep crying every time she spits it out and you'll keep going in to replace it.  Either stop offering it at bedtime, or don't replace it if she spits it out.  Also you may want to try a progressive waiting approach, like instead of going in every 5 minutes, you go 5 minutes, then if she's still crying you wait 10 minutes, then if she's still crying, you wait 15 minutes and then just 15, 15, 15.  That's the basic Ferber method and that's what we use, but we do intervals of 3, 5, then 10, 10, 10.  Usually he either doesn't cry at all or will cry for 3 to 8 minutes and then go to sleep.
