Pickle juice for heartburn?

Hi ladies,

Last night we went to the inlaws for dinner. I had terrible heartburn, like usual, and my FIL suggested that I drink pickle juice to get rid of it. He swore it works better then any tums!

Have any of you heard or tried this? I am kinda chicken to try it out just because the heartburn is so bad that I have puked a few times and puking pickle juice just sounds painful!

Thanks ladies!!

Re: Pickle juice for heartburn?

  • Pre-pregnancy, whenever I had heartburn, I'd drink a shot glass of apple cider vinegar. Worked like a charm. Sometimes I had to do it twice to keep it at bay, but it always worked!

I'm guessing pickle juice is the same concept since it's largely vinegar based.

Fingers crossed, I haven't had heart burn yet this pregnancy, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

  • This is what I do for heart burn. I would suggest dill pickle juice and only a mouth full. But it does make it go away. my great grandma swears by this.

  • Ive never heard of pickle juice for heartburn specifically, but my mom swears by it for a stomach ache
  • I know it sounds crazy but it works for me most times. I will also just eat a dill pickle or two. The only time it hasn't worked is if my stomach as a lot of physical pressure on it (I'm leaning forward) or I've bent down one too many times.

  • My husband told me that acid plus acid makes a barrier/buffer and is actually better than acid plus basic for heartburn. He's a doctor so I tend to believe him, but I wouldn't drink pickle juice personally because I don't like pickles!
  • Thanks ladies!! I tried it last night... and it worked!!!!!

  • Interesting that it worked for heartburn! I'll keep that in mind. Someone at work just told me last week that if you have diarrhea, vomiting, stomach flu, etc. you should drink pickle juice because it's loaded with electrolytes and is better than Gatorade for those symptoms. Don't know for sure about that one...

  • Huh. I wonder if this is why there is the cliche that pregnant ladies like pickles! I'll have to try it.

  • The vinegar from the pickle brine or "juice" is what helps close the stomach sphincter giving you temporary relief but adding more acid to your stomach and can cause you to have worse heartburn when it relaxes again.
  • I haven't tried pickle juice but a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water will knock out any tummy troubles. i swear by it.
