Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Constantly opening and closing hands..?

Probably just being a paranoid mother here, but my 8 MO is constantly opening and closing his hands. He usually turns them towards his chest or tummy and just goes to town. He does it quickly... Like you would scratch an itch. We call him "sticky fingers" when he does it, but what was once a funny joke kind of has me a little worried now.

I really don't see a huge difference in him from his 6 month appointment to now as far as what he is doing. He was sitting up then, but not crawling, and that is still the case. He doesn't "dance", clap his hands, or really babble anything outside of the typical "AHH" screams. When I talk to my mom on the phone, she always asks what his new "tricks" are, and I feel like its been months since I had anything to say.

Anyways... Not sure if I'm just expecting too much, or am just a worried Momma. Do any of you have any idea or experience with this "sticky finger" situation?? Thanks!!

  • My daughter also does the "sticky finger" hand movements and isn't crawling. I like to think of it as she is trying to wave. I am more worried about the fact that she isn't crawling yet even though I keep reading that some babies take longer or don't crawl at all.
  • My daughter does the same thing! She is just trying to learn how to wave :)

  • You girls are way more relaxed about it than me!! Haha I need to take a lesson from you! I suppose this resembles waving (only toward himself, and he is always touching his chest while he does it), but he has been doing this for moonnnnths... Wouldn't he having waving down by now if that's what he was trying to do?

I wish I could convince myself that waving is all he was trying to do, but he started this mess long before we even tried teaching him to wave...

I need to take a chill pill.

  • Don't worry, I've been kinda freaking out about DS's hand fixation too. He'll fan out his fingers and twirl his hand around and stare at them for awhile. He also does what seems to be involuntary actions with them, like batting his paci out of his mouth and getting pissed about it. He's been obsessed with his hands for 2 1/2 months now. I guess there are worse things that could be happening.

  • My DS does the hand thing too...I was getting a little worried wondering if he was the only one...however, he does say mama and is very fast at crawling and is even standing...he will be 8 months in a few days.
  • My son is trying to figure his hands out too. He watches them and moves his fingers and tries to itch his belly. He doesnt crawl yet but really isnt interested in it. He is much more interested in pulling up to the standing position.
