Baby Names

Ayla, Laurelle, etc Turkish/American baby girl names

We found out today It's a Girl! Now for the difficult part, naming her. DH is Turkish and I'm from the US. We live in the US but would like at least one of her names to be Turkish for when we travel to Turkey to see family. Our last name is Turkish and NO ONE will ever pronounce it right so I'm not worried about it 'going with' the name.

Help please! I'm open to any suggestions and combinations of names. Thanks!

We like:

Ayla (Eye Lah, like Isla but the Turk. spelling)

Aylin (Eye Lynn)

Laurelle (Laur ELLE, not Laurel)

Virginia is a strong contender for MN bc it's my mn and many other women in my family.

Combos:

Laurelle Virginia

Ayla Virginia

Other names I like to see my style but are probably out bc of friends/family with these names/popularity: Layla, Sophia, Elise, Adeline. FYI, it this was a boy he would be Davis Saffet (my maiden name is Davison and late FIL was Saffet).

  • I think Ayla is so pretty!  Laurelle too, but I think you will be correctly people constantly (although it looks like it should be pronounced differently from Laurel).

Edit:  My niece is Ayah (Eye-uh).  It is Arabic.  I don't think many people mispronounce it.

I like Ayla, but I pronounced it as ayeluh, not eyeluh.nbsp; I probably won't be the only one to do that.nbsp; I actually like the ayeluh pronunciation but I realize that it's neither here nor there.I'm not much of a fan of the other two.nbsp; Love Virginia!

  • I prefer Aylin Virginia.

  • Out of those 3, I like Ayla.

  • Congrats on the news!

I love Ayla but, in the US, I don't see it being pronounced the way you want it to be pronounced. I see people pronouncing it Aye-lah...not Eye-lah.

I also quite like Laurelle and can see it being pronounced properly because "elle" IS pronounced that way.

(ps. I really like your boy's name as well).

I like Ayla, but I pronounced it as aye-luh, not eye-luh.  I probably won't be the only one to do that.  I actually like the aye-luh pronunciation but I realize that it's neither here nor there.

I'm not much of a fan of the other two.  Love Virginia!

That is my main concern with Ayla, bc it's my favorite name so far. I actually like it pronounced either way, but DH thinks it's weird to not pronounce it correctly since it is a well know Turkish name.

  • Congrats on the news!

My favourite combo is Ayla Virginia. As for pronouncing/writing it incorrectly: it is annoying, but it is a legitimate name and spelling. A simple "it's pronounced eye-la and written Ayla" should do. It's not as if you're naming Ayyhhl?.

Thanks! I'm glad we still have about 20 more weeks before a name has to stick!

  • I really, really love Laurelle Virginia. It's a beautiful name; very feminine and flows so nicely. I don't think Ayla Virginia flows nearly as well, and Ayla will always be mispronounced. Just my two cents. Good luck deciding!

  • I really like Ayla, but I don't love the way it sounds with Virginia as the middle name.

I agree with all of this. But Ayla is so pretty, and I love the significance. As long as you don't mind correcting people, then go for it!

Got a good MN for Ayla? I agree Virginia doesn't go as well and we don't have to use it.

  • FWIW I didn't have any issues pronouncing any of the names, and my closest heritage is Italian!  :)
Ayla is beautiful, as is Laurelle... good luck!
