Toddlers: 24 Months+

She just hates to sleep

I know 2 can be a very difficult age.  My 28-month-old has always hated sleeping since birth, and at 11 months we did Ferber and since then she has slept better at night.  Lately, though, not so much.  She is up multiple times screaming for me to put the blanket on, rub her back, and that she wants to get out of the crib.  Most of the time, if I go in and put her blanket on and do a quick back rub, she'll go back to sleep right away, but not always.  I once let her go without going in to check on her and she literally called for me for over an hour before I gave in.  She naps for my husband twice a week (Mondays and Fridays), and sometimes for my mom the other three days (Tues, Wed, Thurs), but on weekends when I am home, she has refused for over a month.

Just this past weekend I was telling some friends that on a 6-hour car trip to and from my in-laws she never fell asleep, and they were apalled.  She probably gets, on average, 11-12 hours of sleep total in a 24-hour time period.

I guess I'd just like to know that other toddlers sleep as little as mine does.  Please reassure me that this is the case!

Re: She just hates to sleep

  • My daughter seems to hate the process of falling asleep.  She's in a twin bed now, so getting her to fall asleep is a whole new problem.  Naps are becoming torture.  She will go to her room no problem, but as soon as I ask her to lay down in her bed, she starts to freak out and fight it.  When I finally get her calmed down and I am able to read to her (I always read a book or two at nap time) it's no trouble.  Bedtime is a whole different story.  It takes anywhere from 30-60 minutes to get her to fall asleep.  She has started waking up in the middle of the night and then when we go in to tell her to go back to bed she wants us to lay with her.  So it ends up being another 30-45 minutes in the middle of the night.  Then to top it off, she is waking up early, anywhere from 5:45 - 6:30, and ready to go for the day.

Between nap and nighttime, she is probably getting 10-11 hours of sleep.  I know it's not enough, but there isn't much more we can do!!

  • We're at between 10.5 and 12 hrs of sleep a day, between night time and one nap. She has never liked sleeping and still wakes up in the middle of the night. She goes 7.5 hrs between getting up in the morning and her nap, so I'm not shocked she didn't sleep on a 6hr car ride, especially if you ever stopped for a diaper change.

  • 11-12 hours of sleep is all they really need at this age. DD is starting to STTN more frequently but still wakes up once a night a lot of nights. She is in bed by 8 and usually sleeps until about 630-645. She will nap about 1.5 hours although she has started skipping out on those more frequently as well (both at home and at daycare 3 mornings a week).

the night time waking a don't bother me too much. Se is still nursing so I just get up and nurse her back to sleep. The only time she wakes up multiple times a night is if she is sick.
