BFing and wanting to be TTC

BFing and wanting to be TTC DH and I would like to have another baby soonish. DD still nurses a lot though, and AF hasn?t returned. She loves solids (we do BLW), but I don?t want to rush the weaning process. She has a very strong nurse to sleep association, and I feel like we both still very much benefit from and enjoy our nursing time together. If I were to have another baby, I think I?d be interested in tandem nursing. With that said, how likely is a pregnancy really when AF hasn?t returned? And how would you detect pregnancy? Do normal pregnancy tests work even if you haven?t had a period post-partum? Any recommended reading on this topic? Sorry for my ignorance!

  • Pregnancy can happen before your first period if you happen to catch the very first ovulation. Regular pg tests work, and if you're having unprotected sex you should probably POAS every couple of weeks just in case. Buy a stack of wondfo's off amazon to keep it cheap.

I got pregnant while breastfeeding, but not until DS was 18 months. We're still nursing.

  • I got pregnant when DD was about 11 months old while BFing, we also did BLW. We went away for a long weekend where she didn't want to nurse, just check out what was going on all the time and eating snacks, came home had sex once and poof baby number 2 on the way.

I never had a period between the two which threw the people at the doctors office for a loop...doc laughed at that.

Normal tests work just fine. I figured it out because I had a bit of spotting but a period never came.

I've also nursed all through this pregnancy and don't see DD stopping any time soon...the last month she's been nursing more than she has for a long time.

  • DD is 14 months, still nursing, no AF, no BC, no baby. :( I've had to give up on my dream of 2u2.
I know you can get pregnant while still BFing and before you get AF but it hasn't happened for me.

I am in a similar situation as Rosebud. My dd is 17 months, still nursing (though only about 4 times between 8p and 5a, and nothing during the day), and no AF. I think the majority of women do see AF return while nursing (the average I have read is about 14 months if you're still nursing, APing, etc.), but for some, it doesn't.  You can consider changing up your nursing routine to see if it makes a difference without weaning completely.  Good luck!

  • We are currently TTC #2.  My DD is 10 months old and nurses A LOT.  We bedshare and she nurses for most of the night.  I really thought I wouldn't get AF for awhile especially since she nurses so much at night but I just got my first postpartum period last month.

  • DD is almost 9 months, I got my period back at 5 months PP. She nurses approx 6 times during the day and once overnight. Hard to say when you will get your period back, might be next month or might not be until LO is fully weaned. i was very surprised to get mine back at 5 months, kind of a bummer! i was enjoying not having to worry about it!

This was like me exactly. And I was pregnant again the following month. Whoops!
  • Thank you all for your kind and helpful replies.  Guess I'll try my best to be patient and see how things go.... Some days that's a lot harder than others (got to stop eyeing newborn clothes and thinking about my advancing age)!

Congrats to those with new little ones on the way, and best wishes to those TTC!
