I wouldn't pay for it, but we requested that it be collected for a public bank. If still available, we would have been able to get the cord blood back without an initial collection cost. Our hospital was a collection site. Unfortunately, they weren't able to collect enough to bank. I had heard this could be an issue for multiple births, but they never told us the real reason they couldn't collect.

No. At our hospital the public bank only took term babies. I asked their people and for every donation only 1 out of 7 or 8 had enough blood to make an acceptable donation. Most twins are preterm and would not have enough blood for a private donation. The private banks do not tell you this.
So we did not do any private banking. Plus having twins they are already potential living donors for each other - so that negates some of the thought to bank it for a future child.
We used Cord Blood Registry and had a good experience with them. Our babies were full term and they said there was plenty to collect. Now if it turns out that they lied I'd be livid but in the mean time, for us, it's worth it to have.

This exactly! I was told they wouldn't accept from multiples.
