bumbo strap?

My friend gave me her old Bumbo. I was just looking at some online and noticedthe new ones have a belt. Is the belt necessary?...will I be okay using the old style w/o one? Anyone have Bumbo experience and can offer me an opinion..should I invest in a new one w/a strap?

Re: bumbo strap?

  • From what I understand, the strap was "ordered" after a series of unfortunate falls. But I think people were setting them on high surfaces like tables.

I also got a bumbo from my SIL without straps... apparently you can also get a tray for them too.

I think as long as you're seriously watching with LO and LO is sitting in it while on the floor, it's okay.

  • I echo what everyone else said. I just got one without a strap and feel it is perfectly safe. It's made to be a floor seat but of course some stupid people try and use it for other things. You can get the strap for free from Bumbo if you want it though.

I use mine on the couch, but only if I'm right next to LO. And I mean right next to him. I always say, as soon as you think you've idiot proofed something, a bigger idiot will come along...

thats still being safe IMO. I think some of the injuries came from people putting them on tables and/or leaving baby unattended. Of course with the strap that just means baby and seat fall to the floor instead of just baby!

Exactly!  That was the first thing I thought of, when I saw the straps!

Once DS has a bit of better head control, I totally plan on getting one and hopefully one w/out straps since it seems to be annoying ;P

  • I got 1 from my SIL and went to the website and they mailed me a kit to put a strap on it. It was free and didn't take long to do.
  • We had registered for one, but it was taken off because they recalled them. We just bought one and DH took the straps off before we even used it. They looked like they were going to be such a pain! G only sits in it if I am sitting right there with him. People are just stupid and leave their children sitting in them on counter tops and walk away and then need someone to blame. So now instead of the just the child falling the entire seat will fall with them.

  • I'm not sure how the strap even makes it safer. It's not like it helps the seat stay attached to whatever surface it's sitting on. We just borrowed a Bumbo from a friend yesterday, no strap.

  • We opened the bumbo we got as a shower gift about a week or two ago. Ours came with an add on kit for the strap. I opted not to add it, at least not for a while. I don't see myself endangering LO by putting him on any elevated surfaces, and as others have said, all I think it would do is pull the seat over with baby, not prevent the falls altogether.

  • thanks everyone. I had heard there was a recall so I figured it was something to do with it, but I wasn't sure exactly what the reasoning was. I don't plan on leaving LO alone in it, so I should be good then!

OMG HOW DID YOU GET THEM OFF!?

I've been trying but I'm scared I'm going to rip the bumbo.

Agree! The straps seem really uncomfortably placed... at least this is why I think my guy hates his seat : Every other baby I see seems to love these seats, so I'm dying to take the straps off and try again, but don't want to break the chair!
