Adoption

Gifts?

I know most of you are adopting/have adopted domestically, but I wanted to know what everyone's opinion was on gifts for your adoption coordinator. She is having to make some calls on our behalf that I'm very grateful for and wanted to gift her a small gift card or something to show our appreciation. However I don't know if there are any rules about that? I don't want to get in trouble over a $10 gift card! :)

thanks!

Re: Gifts?

  • Personally, we waited until our adoptions were final before expressing our thanks in any way other than written/spoken words.  Once everything was legal, we sent gifts to the orphanage, the boys' caregivers, and our lawyers in Peru.  You'd likely be okay (I know our agency will accept donations while you are in process), but just to be on the safe side, I'd wait until everything is done and legal.

  • Lurker here, but in most cases, state agencies, or even not for profit agencies there's usually a $25 limit on gifts and even then it can be walking a fine line of whether or not to keep them, report them, etc. Does she work in an office that you could send cookies , lunch, or chocolates (something that could be shared amongst a group of people) and include a thank you note about how above and beyond she went and how much you appreciated it? Generally food vs. actual dollar amounts (i.e. a gift card) are easier to put on the books (and the mind if she's specifically signed a contract regarding gifts).
