Babies: 6 - 9 Months

8 month old HATES solids! :(

My first DD ate everything and anything that came at her mouth starting at 4 months (I only wish she was still like that, but that's another issue, lol).  So at 4-5 months I tried starting solids with my 2nd daughter.  She hated it.  I thought maybe she wasn't quite ready and delayed it until she was about 6.5 months.  Still hated it.  I've waited a couple days in between, and I've tried being on a consistent routine.  I've tried fruit, cereals, veggies, puffs, mashed, pureed...nada.  So far we've done applesauce, bananas, peas, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, avocados, pears, carrots, rice and oatmeal cereal.  Hates it all.  She makes horrible faces, and spits it right back out.  She won't take bottles, sippys, any sort of medicine if needed...If it ain't a boob, she doesn't want it!

I know it's only for practice until they're a year...but man, this is frustrating!  Anyone else going through this, or anyone have any tips?  I'm at a loss, since my first had no issues with solids.

  • Yes, I could of wrote this! I am in the exact same boat, only my daughter is 9 months old. It is frustrating, because I go through the whole routine of making it, heating it up, etc and I end up throwing it out. The only thing I have success with is letting her gum my whole banana. If I take that same banana and mash it and put it on a spoon, then forget it. I think I am going to start following a BLW approach and see if that goes any better. She is completely satisfied living on BM only. GL!

  • we have food issues as well but not quite as bad as you.  Sometimes my daughter will take food on my finger but not at all on the spoon.  Maybe not focus on a full meal but maybe just a few tastes from your finger and then be done.  that way she doesn't get so frustrated.  good luck!

  • My DD is 8.2 months and hates all food. Can't get the spoon near her. She shuts her lips so tight. Same with medicine. I have been trying food since 4.5 months. Everyone says it will change but I can't imagine. She also won't gum any toy or teething ring! Nothing but a paci or bottle will go past those lips.

  • I'm sorry to hear that.

my baby rachel was 7.5 months when she first tried spoon feeding her and she loved it. she was making a "mm" sound with every spoon... it was actually pretty cute.

I don't think she asked you to make her feel bad with sharing a video about how your LO does eat solids... people are so odd

  • Something that has helped us is to let LO feed himself. I've been roasting veggies in stick form and giving it to LO. He picks it up and puts it in his mouth himself and that seems to make him happy about it because he's in control. Anything that we try to directly put in his mouth doesn't go in, but he'll happily feed himself.  Plus, if he doesn't eat it, at least it keeps him occupied enough so that I can eat my dinner.
