Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When is poop not normal??

LO has always had pretty solid poops, esp. since we started solids 3 months ago, but often they are just round little hard balls ranging in color from yellowish-a very very dark brown (almost black looking).

Yesterday he had two poop diapers of JUST round balls, the first one was one ball about a quarter size and it looked black with some green mixed in.  Very hard.  The second diaper was 3 balls dime-quarter sized and mostly army greenish in color and a thick clay consistency.  (Sorry for TMI!)

I've called the doctor before because at one point he was really straining to get anything out that he was bleeding a little bit, he isn't straining anymore but I still am concerned even though the doctor didn't seem to be in the past, so I'm hesitant to call them again... So I was wondering when is it not normal??

TIA

That's good that you called pedi.  I think the green color usually means infection of some sort.

Well I didn't call the pedi this time, that was maybe a month ago... they thought because he was eating banana oatmeal that it was backing him up.  So we cut back on the banana drastically and gave him some water/pear juice and that helped.  But these "balled up poop" yesterday were really concerning me.  I'm thinking I should call?

  • Poor LO.. I noticed with solid food more my LO would sometimes have hard poops. My sisters kids had trouble with going to bathroom. Dr suggest a little bit of water over prunes. She would either give her an ounce or add an extra ounce in bottle(if FF) and that seemed to help. I tried it with my LO and it seemed to help alot!

Don't hesitate to call DR. thats what they are there for!!

  • Green poo is not unusual, but the little pebbles would worry me just a tad. I have always heard that the orange veggies constipate and the "p" foods help loosen; so you might want to avoid sweet potatoes, winter squash, and carrots, and be sure LO gets some pears, prunes, or plums.

  • Are you giving LO any water? Once they start solids, they really start needing more fluids besides BM/formula. Just like if you are eating and not drinking, your poo will be more solid and you are more likely to be backed up.

As for the green color, it can be from food or it can also be a infection that may or may not manifest itself. Our pedi said it isn't a big deal unless they start having diarrhea or vomiting. It normally clears up on its own.
