Spitting

Ugh.  DS is spitting.  I hate it with a passion.

What do you do to deal with spitting in your house?

Re: Spitting

  • DS went through a phase where he was spitting his water or milk after drinking it. (He occasionally still does it but not as much as he did). We would just take away his cup for a while. If he's just spitting his normal saliva (not a drink), I'm not sure.

Kids are so weird sometimes, aren't they?!

  • J is spitting too. When I see he's getting his saliva ready, I put my hand over his mouth. Sometimes he swallows it and sometimes it runs down his neck which he hates so it keeps him from doing it for awhile. Come to think of it it's been a few weeks since he's tried it

  • Oh you mean after DH taught him to spit over the balcony!!!?

I started emphasizing that the only place we spit is in the sink.  I ask him this question a lot.  It's not been a huge issue so many just ignore it and he quits.  I encourage him to spit in the sink though after brushing so this seems to be his outlet.

B has always been an extra drooly kid (he has big adenoids) so he's always got saliva ready, lol.

He's one of those kids that doesn't seem to mind time-outs too much so I think I'll try focusing on where he can spit to give him that allowed outlet.

  • We've noticed a trend lately that spitting, hitting, and throwing are signs he's tired.  I will tell him "J if you hit/spit/throw one more time you're going to bed" and he will look at me and do it again and then put his toys down and head upstairs.  It's like he's saying "I agree mom, I'm tired, but I really don't want to admit defeat so we'll pretend it's a punishment ok"  lol  When he starts doing the spitting when we're out in public it's not so much that he's trying to spit as he's trying to blow raspberries and failing.  We just have to tell him repeatedly to knock it off and if he continues we start in with the "stop the spitting or we're going home"  He looooooves being out in the world so that usually gets him to stop.  When it's the milk or cup of water drooling/spitting we just take his drink away for awhile.
