Military Families

Promotion

My husband is putting on Mst. Sgt. and has his ceremony this upcoming Thursday. While I guess I am technically a military wife, my husband keeps our lives as militaryfree as possible. In the past four years, I think I've gone to a handful of events militaty related. He only directly works with civilians now, and at his last job, there were only two other people in his shop.

Anyhow, we plan on going out on Friday with the couple of friends we have here. We just PCS'd two months ago. I don't exactly know what the protocol is for me, as a wife. I would like to get him/do something special for him, but I'm scratching my head as to what. Does anybody have any good suggestions?

Re: Promotion

  • Are they doing any sort of pinning on or promotion ceremony? My H promoted right before our wedding and I dressed nice and sat in the front row of the little conference room and pinned on his new rank when he was promoted. I also made a dessert for the little reception they did afterward. Other than that, I'm not sure. My H did buy everyone's first drink at tge bar afterwards.

This is what happens in my unit when someone gets promoted. Their spouse shows up with kids in tow and after thepromotion they take pictures as a family.

  • Yes, I get that I'm suppose to go to the ceremony. I would like to do something for him besides show up. Is this uncommon?

  • What else would you do? I could see hosting a small party but I don't think it is really necessary.

  • Do you mean you want to do something for him privately or with his unit? I know when DH got promoted we went to dinner with his platoon in celebration. When I got promoted DH was already in Iraq so I just celebrated with my parents who flew out to "pin me."

  • Do you want to give him something?  There is no real traditional gift or anything.  In our group, we usually have a BBQ and a keg.

  • When H last got promoted it was the promotion that most sailors consider to be the biggest one, and he had to go through a lot more than just a pinning ceremony.  I went to the store on base that does nice keepsake gifts and got him an oar made.  I picked some coins for it, his rating symbol and a plaque that I had a message written on.  I gave it to him after the pinning and he loved it.

At his previous promotions though I didn't do anything else other than the pinning and we went to eat after.  I don't know if there is a big significance to that promotion he is getting where a gift would be typical though because I'm really only familiar with Navy/CG ranks.
