can someone explain the disney vault

i mean, I get that they hold their movies back & re-release a couple titles every year blah blah blah...but I wanted to get hte little mermaid for DD and you can get it on amazon--- granted, the 2006 release or something but what is the point of the 'vault' if you can buy the movies new at other retailers? I'm afraid to buy it, like it won't be the right movie or something...

we usually get movies from ebay.  A year or so ago, not this past winter when it was released, I got a brand new Cinderella and DH just got a new Snow White.  We haven't had any problems.

I don't know why they do it.  Maybe so they can charge you $30+ for the movie when they rerelease it with some stupid high tech change? My sister bought almost all her movies off half.com and they were real copies.

They do it so they can rerelease it every few years add on a few extras and people will buy it. Now they are releasing everything in blu ray. If you just want the dvd, ebay it. Otherwise you can wait until it's released again, most likely sometime in the next 2 years. It's dumb, but it makes them money

The vault idea has existed long before amazon and ebay.  Back in the day you really couldn't get a copy once it had been put in the vault.

We just bought DD The little Mermaid off Ebay for Christmas. It makes a loud noise (like the DVD isn't flat) when in the DVD player but it plays. We'll buy it on Blue Ray when it comes out this year.

I used to work at Disney and regularly called on the DVD/Video department. One day, they showed me the magical vault.  Want to know what it actually is?  It's a storage closet among a bunch of offices.  lol

Thanks all...I get that the vault is a big publicity & money making ploy, I just was confused as to how you could still get the videos easily in all these other places that I considered retailers (not re-sellers like ebay)...but now that I think about it, on amazon I think it is from private sellers, not actually from amazon...so I guess that solves that. I have a blu ray player but DD wants the movie so I think I'll just go the old DVD route...
