Hair twirling

DD start twirling her hair on her 2nd birthday and it is driving me crazy.  I was hoping it was a phase and she'd stop, but it has been getting worse.  She does it whenever she's bored, tired, angry, hungry, happy... so all the time.  She twists it into tight little knots that I have to comb or cut out, so her hair looks terrible all the time.  I have tried putting it up in pony tail and pig tails, but it is too short to put it all up and she will twirl anything that stays down.

This is driving me crazy.  Any ideas to slow her down????

Re: Hair twirling

  • Aiden used to play with his hair constantly.  It has been awhile since he did this, but I can relate because it drove me nuts.

I would just let her be, and she will probably get tired of it/grow out of it.

If it makes you feel any better, I talked to my pedi about it when it was going on, and it's supposedly very normal.

  • DS had a sleepy routine of sucking his thumb and twirling his hair which also became more and more frequent. He's mostly kicked the thumb, but the hair twirling is still his "thing." At first we were like, "No hair!" But I know he does it for comfort and since he doesn't resort to his thumb as much, I don't want him to become totally neurotic if we harp too much on the hair twirling.

If course he also has short hair since he's a boy, so I don't have to worry about knots. But it's so funny after he gets a haircut because you can tell he's annoyed that there's barely anything to twirl!

I think it's just a phase like any other and nothing to worry about.

  • DS also plays with his hair when he's sleepy (or if I'm holding him at the time he also plays with mine, LOL). I think it's normal, but I can understand being annoyed by the knots. Maybe try a shorter hair cut for a while? I've tried redirecting DS to a lovey, but he just puts the lovely in one hand and plays with his hair with the other. LOL
