Eye Exams? — The Bump

Eye Exams?

When did/will your child have their first eye exam?  We will shortly be changing from GREAT insurance to just OK insurance, and I'm wondering if I should get my 3 year old one before we change.

Re: Eye Exams?

  • Do it now. DS just had his first exam and it turns out he has terrible vision. He got a free vision screening that the Lions Club does for ages 3 and 4 and they recommended a regular exam. If they hadn't caught it, I may not have taken him in for who knows how long. Fortunately, my company suddenly started offering vision insurance for this year.
  • DD was 7; DS1 wasn't "old enough" at the time I called.  He was turning 5.  We don't live in a big city so there isn't a children's eye doc.

  • I've been wondering about this, too.

We have vision insurance but I haven't taken DD1 in for an exam yet. I have no reason to believe that she has any issues with her vision, but I wasn't sure when I should start taking her just to be sure.

The pediatrician did a basic exam when we were in for DDs' 4 year visit.  My optometrist said to bring them in when they are 5/before they start K because DH and I both have bad eyes.

  • DS1 got his first one just after he turned 3.
  • 1 yo but that is because I have muscle problems and needed to rule it out. Actually DD went around 4mos when diagnosed with torticolis, it would be rate for eye problems to cause it at that age but I wanted to rule out. We have an awesome pediatric Opthamologist and he said at 1y that DS would eventually need glasses and at 6 could get a prescription but the doc recommends waiting because it is not too bad.

  • In Illinois, you have to have an eye exam before entering kindergarten.  DD went for her first exam at 2 1/2 because of some issues.  She ended up needing glasses.  Her eye doctor told me to bring DS in at 3 unless I noticed issues with him as well.  Since your insurance is changing, I would bring your LO in.

  • We're taking DD next week for the first time.  She's almost 3.5.  We wouldn't have even thought about it, but they did a vision screening at school that she failed.  We've never noticed anything wrong with her vision!  :(

  • Ds1 is four and has an eye condition Duane's retraction syndrome do he goes yearly for check ups. Its a missing muscle in one eye so he can't move his eye all the way over to one direction. We barely notice it. He has been going since age 2 and luckily has great vision. I don't know when we'll take ds2 I probably will ask eye dr at next visit. I am thinking age 4 or 5.
  • The pediatrician did an eye exam at both DS and DD's 4 yr check ups. DS did okay with the first eye and terrible with the 2nd. The nurse and I just thought he was over it(terrible mommy moment). He had never complained about not being able to see so I didn't think much about it.  At his 5yr check they were more thorough and recommended we see a pediatric ophthalmologist because his vision in his left eye was terrible. He now goes every 3 months and is wearing glasses and we have to patch his good eye every day.  I wish I had done more after his 4 year check.

DD will start going for an annual check at 5yrs.

My oldest son aslo has duanes syndrome, he was diagnosed at 3 yrs old. Which is very rare!

My middle son had his first eye exam at 4 yrs ols with the pediatrician. My youngest will have his at 4 too. We won't see an opthamologist unless an issue like with my oldest who was seen by the optomalogist at 3.

  • My pedi started them at their wellness appointments at age 3.  No need to go to a eye doc unless something comes up on their exam.  My older DD did have one with an eye doc when she was 2 as she was having headaches and we had to rule out a few things, eye sight being one issue and my pedi felt better having an eye doc do it (perfect eye sight).  As long as the kids can pass the pedi one and have no issues seeing in the classroom (older kids), I don't see the point in going to a specialist at this point.

  • Our ped does basic vision exams at the well check visit starting at age 3.  She recommended seeing an actual eye doctor somewhere between 3-5 before K.  We took DD when she turned 4.  Her vision was fine but DH and I both have horrible eyesight so we will have her examined again in the the fall when she actually starts K.

  • We did his exam last week and he did GREAT.  The doctor said his vision is almost TOO perfect for this age, so we need to keep an eye on him to make sure his vision doesn't change too rapidly.  I have horrible vision, and DH just got his first prescription for glasses, so I wouldn't be surprised if he needs them eventually.  We'll get him checked out yearly!

    Thanks for all your advice!
