GTKY: High school

I'm watching Can't Hardly Wait. I love this movie! I was in 11th grade, I think, when it came out so it reminds me of high school and that got me reminiscing lol

I was a cheerleader, like a wired peppy cheerleader. However, I was in all advanced classes and did dual enrollment. So I was a brainy, hyper cheerleader lol

What were you like???

Re: GTKY: High school

  • When I was a freshman and sophomore I was so involved with EVERYTHING.  I mean I was always in a sport and I was student class president but then I went to Germany for my Junior year and that all went to hell.  My parents moved to Oregon (military fam) while I was away so it was a brand new school Senior year and I just worked a lot.  I hung out with basically everyone in school but when school was out I went to work and then home.  I guess I got anti social.  I have no idea how that happened!

  • Yeah I was one of those floaters who was friends with everyone, preps, nerds, jocks, goths, etc. I was also the president of two organizations, both of which I advance to nationals in competitions [skillsUSA for web design
and Best Robotics] I was in student council, I did color guard with the marching band, I was on the dance committee, I was the photo journalist/author for the school news paper, and I did community service almost every weekend. I did UIL from time to time as well. I also took all AP classes and was on the AB honor roll every report card :]

    Dang you were busy!

I was also friends w a lot of different groups of people. Ironically, I wasn't popular, at least I don't think I was. I kinda hated the super popular group. I just really loved the stunts and jumps in cheerleading. I started w gymnastics in elementary school, but there was no gymnastics team to join when I moved in 8th grade

Watch Heathers. I was Dump Truck Martha. I had a few friends, and I still talk with the three of them via Facebook.
I was a late bloomer and didn't find myself until my mid 20's.

I've seen almost every 80s classic movie, but I've never seen Heathers. Guess I need to!

  • I didn't really fit into one mold.  I was in all honors classes, ran track and XC, played lacrosse, and took the nerdy "I want to be a teacher" class.

  • I think I explained this in my AMA but in a bit more detail. In NSW there's a thing called selective high schools. You sit an exam in year 6, submit your preferences of where you want to go, and then if you score high enough you are accepted.

I got in to one. There's 17 fully selective schools. Hornsby, my school, had only gone back to being selective a couple of years before I started the test so it was something of an unknown entity because none of the selective students had graduated yet [there's 6 years of high school here, we don't have junior and middle high in separate schools]. Since being all selective HGHS rarely ranks below 6th in the state.

Because we were a selective school everyone in our grade had been something of a nerd. In years 7 and 8 I hung out with the group that listened to popular alternative rock music, who in time would be one of the groups going out drinking and partying on weekends. In years 9, 10 and early year 11 I sat with the goths who remain my closest friends still. I know one didn't identify as goth, and we probably wouldn't be obviously goth if you saw us walking down the street any more... But it's how we identified ourselves, although we also included Trekkies and Star Wars fans and dr who etc.

Unfortunately I felt like I had to leave that group as I had a BF who I wanted to talk about [noone else did], and he went to the school that one of my friend's dad had been employed by and was in the process of suing. It wasn't nice. Said BF is now DH.

The group I sat with in the rest of 11 and year 12... Eh. I'm not sure what I'd call them. Studious? Not really really nerdy, but they were one of the Caucasian groups [more than half my grade was of Asian decent] that were focused on academics not partying. I made a couple of good friends there, but never as close.

So, in summary, I identified as goth, confused the popular people who couldn't see beyond their own little world [much to my delight], ended up being willing to talk to almost anyone, was probably a nerd, but in a grade full of nerds didn't really stuck out academically. I did one choral group for much of it, but that was all by way of extracurricular activities.
  • Band geek, basketball and softball statistician, and quiz bowl MVP. I went crazy in college though joined a sorority, went drunk to class. It was like I was 3 different people in the span of 10 years
  • I was a great student, in the top 5%...I kind of hung out with everybody. I wasn't over the top popular, but I had friends in each 'circle'. I loved singing and I was very involved in chorus and show choir...

  • I was a quiet girl but involved in as much as my parents would allow.  I played basketball and ran hurdles in track. I always had to study to do well....didn't come super easy for me.  Guess you would have to say I was a teacher's pet.   Good thing I'm a teacher now, huh?

  • Bad, just bad. In the beginning I isolated because my best friend made out with my boyfriend and I was crushed. This was 9th grade. Her boyfriend was a junior and I somehow got adopted by his group and dated his friend. That was the first two years. Last two years i played softball, was friends with a lot of people and was super emo. Senior year I experimented a lot with drugs and alcohol, met my H, got suspended twice never went to school and I dont know how I graduated. With all that said I had a ton of AP classes and always passed without trying hard.

  • I was number one in my class, a cheerleader, dance team member, and on student government. I did the school musical every year. I was well known, but not popular... I was too much of a good kid to be popular.

  • I was a stoner and partied all the time. But I took school seriously thankfully and got decent grades. I got along with all groups and clicks.
