I hate hate hate that people who do spank are labeled as "hitting" their child in an abusive manner. I was spanked, it worked. We spank our DD if need be. It works for her and she responds to it. Clear and utter defiance is when we do it. Timeouts sometimes, taking away toys, etc. For our son, spanking may not work as a form of discipline. It does not work for every child.
I agree that whatever way you choose to discipline your child you just need to be consistent. However, that does not mean my way of discplining needs to be the same as her school, at her grandparents house, etc. She will learn that different places have different rules and different consequences. So no, that is not failure at all.
To label it as abuse or lazy parenting is very far from the truth.
