Taking toddler and baby out by yourself

I have yet to take my two children out together by myself. I will take one while my DH or grandparent watches the other. Or the children, DH and I will all go out. I guess I'm afraid of the baby needing to nurse etc or my son having a meltdown (he is definitely in the terrible 2s). It seems silly to not take them out. I keep telling myself when DD is a bit older and on a more predictable schedule - so I know I will eventually. Does anyone have any stories of how you make it work or any advice? I appreciate your thoughts.

  • My ds1 is a little older than yours, but i try to stop for a snack before we leave where we are. This keeps ds1 occupied while i bf ds2. Also, i keep a dvd player in the car for emergencies!

  • Honestly just do it. I'm on mobile and can't see your tickers but mine are 27mos and 3mos. DH is deployed so I've taken them out by myself lots. Heck almost every outing is just me and the girls. It's not always easy and there have definitely been tricky moments but the only way to get comfortable with it is by doing it.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • Just do it! I have ended up nursing my baby in the car while my 2 year old is in her car seat. You will figure out little tricks to get by :
  • I don't do it a ton but have done it for short trips. You'll be fine, I promise!

  • Like PPs said, you have to just do it. I always make sure that the oldest has everything she needs before we do anything. I have also BF dd2 in the car and even a restaurant while the other one is with me.

  • I take my 3.5 year old twins and the baby out on a daily basis together. We go out to lunch with friends, shopping, grocery store, errands, play dates, etc. It's honestly not hard at all. Depending on the situation, I either put my twins in a double stroller and wear the baby or have them walk (we've worked since they were 1.5 y/o on holding hands and staying near me) while I put the baby in a stroller. Some of the easiest/fun places are Trader Joes, where I put the baby in the big part of the cart, give the girls their own mini-carts to push and then we shop! Or Target, because they have awesome double carts and then I can put the baby in the big part of the cart. Honestly, I would go crazy if we weren't out everyday, so for me, it makes life so much easier to go places. And the more you do it, the better your kids get at behaving properly at restaurants, etc.

  • I agree with pp, just do it! DD just turned 2 and DS is 3 months. I try to park close to the carts so I can just get everyone loaded up. I also don't have high expectations, I don't try to get all my groceries for the week. I just get what I can and hope that no one freaks out!

  • My oldest is a little older but I take them out all the time.  I try to find someplace interesting to sit when I nurse - a water fountain, by the big Christmas tree, at the play ground.  He always entertains himself and is usually pretty good when I nurse. I have my iphone with games and shows in case of emergency - never used it yet.  I when shopping I either wear LO or but his carseat in the basket of the shopping cart.  I do almost everything except a full weeks grocery shop with the 2 of them.

  • I've taken mine out by myself plenty of times. Heck, that's the only way I got any Christmas shopping done. Sometimes I even throw the 6 year old into the mix. I've found that the easiest way for me to handle them all is babywearing. I put the baby in my wrap and the toddler in the shopping cart or umbrella stroller. Easy peasy.
